Apache title issue

Ok..........so I'm supposed to leave in the morning to get the Apache. It's in Maryland. Just find out that my buddy (John) never had the title put in his name. It's still in the prior owners name from when John bought the truck.........almost 20yrs ago. The prior owner did sign it but it's not witnessed. This could present a problem for me. How the heck do I get this title from their name into mine in PA?? Ideas please.........

No. But how do I handle it up here.............we need copies of seller ID.

Have your buddy put it in his name first in maryland. Then use his info when the title comes back to transfer to pa. It's not gonna be on the road in the next two months anyway.

Tried to copy paste maryland title transfer, didn't work. Looks really easy though for maryland resident to resident.

When I bought a car from ohio, i just needed the title signed to transfer it. The registration place (they are also my insurance place) didn't even look at the bill of sale that I had the guy write for me.

They will have to do the vin recording thing if it has never been registered in pa before, luckily mine was originally sold in pa.

I've never had one issue with an out of state title and I've done this probably 5 times in the last 5 years or so ... It's in-state titles where questions are raised and it gets a little troublesome. Just say its a complete non-running project you bought at spring Carlisle swap meet and you'll be fine.

When buying a vehicle out of state, some things to consider for title transfer:

The title should be signed over by the seller. If that is done, you have a chance that PA will accept the title transfer.

You have a better chance if the title is signed over by the seller and you have a signed bill of sale as well.

You have the best chance if the title is signed over in the presence of a notarist, and then stamped accordingly.


When doing the title transfer on a vehicle from out of state, the PA notary will likely need to verify the VIN number, which would mean driving the vehicle there so they can compare the title and the vehicle VIN tag. If the vehicle is in non-driving condition, a VIN tracing on paper is the next solution.

The issue with #2 is that the last titled seller has not been seen in 20yrs when my friend John bought the truck from them. So there is not a chance of getting them to sign a bill of sale. That makes item #1 and #2 sketchy. He's going to have the title moved to his name then send it up to me signed and stamped.

Guess I will be owning a GM product.
