Looking at a Mercury Mountaineer - any opinions?

It looks like it's time to replace my trusty Taurus. I found a 03 Mountaineer with the 4.6 and awd. It has 129k. It seems pretty solid. Does anyone have any experience with these? I want to know what to look for. The price is insanely low.

I love our AWD 2005 Aviator but it is a 32v 4.6 and I don't think it shares many parts with the Explorers or Mountaineers. I'm not too big a fan of the Mountaineer front ends though. But the IRS really makes the '02+ models ride nice.

I have a 03 Explorer XLT, basically the same as the mountaineer. I love it. Watch for rust though around the insides of the door jams.

I had a 02 mountaineer years back, biggest piece of shit I have ever owned. Motor went with under 100k, trans was on its last leg, and horrible electrical problems..

I drove it. It was really solid. If I didn't know the milage, I would have sworn it was a lot less. I can pick it up for 3500. I don't think I can pass it up.

I have 136 on the Taurus and there are no issues with it at all. It's the body that is going on it.

If it doesn't need tires or hubs or brakes you're probably not going to get hurt on it at that price. Especially if it is really clean. Just don't be surprised if you have to spend some $$ getting things sorted out.

Already put 2k aside. If I don't spend that. I consider myself ahead of the game

I might be changing my mind on this Merc. Upon further review, it needs a transfer case and the AC is not working. I am starting to think "what else will it need?" So, I started to look at used cars in the 3-6k range and there are not to many clean low mile cars in that range. The reason I was looking for another car is that my Taurus rocker panel is rusting pretty bad but everything else it great. It has 135K on it and does not burn nor leak a drop of oil. It is an ideal car for my needs (back and forth to work, hauling the kids around, etc) SOOOOO, I quick call to Dave @ T and he gave me an estimate to replace the rocker that I cannot pass up. So it looks like I am keep the Taurus around for another couple of years.

Sean, get ready for the "Dave at Twilight" cracks. Truth is, you can't find better quality work at the prices he charges.

I like ours a lot it's a 06 4.6 premier. Auto running boards don't work anymore and I have to fix the drivers side exhaust manifold studs but it's a good looking, nice driving suv.

I am definitely passing on this because now the selling price is becoming a moving target. By that, I mean moving further away from the original price. It becoming a little shady.
