My wife's 07 Tiburon she purchased brand new has held up pretty well over the years in the paint department, but the headlights not so much. I picked up the 3M heavy duty headlight kit on sale from AutoZone. While the kit was pretty complete, it was lacking a little bit for a complete refinishing of the lights. The nice thing is it comes with a 3" velcro backing plate drill attachment and a compounding pad. Also has 500/800/3000 grit sanding discs.
Here was my process:
500grit with the drill
500 by hand to smooth out some of the swirl marks
800grit with the drill
800 by hand to smooth out the swirls
*1000grit by hand
*1000wet by hand
*2000wet by hand
3000grit by dril and by hand
3M Machine Compound that came in the kit by drill
Meguiar's M205 polish to clear up some of the haze from compounding
3M Synthetic Sealant that came in the kit.
Total time: ~90 minutes
Adding in the steps with 1000 and 2000 grit really helped to both increase the clarity and make the compound/polish steps much easier. I am overall very happy with the results and may offer this for others' vehicles. Makes the car look brand new again and can see much better at night.
