Question What's up with teh burning oil smell on these 4.6s?

My other car did the same thing and I thought it was just fuggered up. Well, this '01 does the same thing. I think I've narrowed it down to the cheap rubber elbow that comes off the front of the plenum, makes a 90* bend and goes back into the PCV Valve on the passenger side head. After a drive, it's somewhat mushy to touch it. Is there really that much oil coming out of that valve and into the intake. The other car never used any oil between changes and this one seems fine so far.

There are no other leaks anywhere. WTF? It just drives me nuts.

Mine is noticable when I run an off road pipe. As Frank Tedesco up at PRP made a comment to me last year about smoke from one tail pipe when launching. Both my 2000GT and my current 2004GT have done this. Doesn't seem to use much oil when it happens as I never really need to add anything when I check.

I run a catted pipe now and it is not noticable. The biggest thing is turning the high rpm's and the cams are creating a nice oil mist in the valve covers which easily gets pulled thru the pcv system. I picked up and air/oil seperator from Jegs that I plan the use to keep any further oil from being pulled into the intake system and then burned off. Not good for making power if oil is burning. My spark plugs seem to stay clean so I know it's very little being burned off.

thanks, Ares. Are you going to put the a/o seperator on the PCV hose on the pass side or driver's side? or both? and where are you going to mount it. I would think somewhere on the firewall, but these damn things got so many hoses running around it looks like chit as it is.

    Question

After doing some research, it seems like all the articles and companies that have them for sale only talk about the driver's side. Wouldn't the pass side do the same thing?

I've seen them range from $40 - $80 on the mustang sites. I bet I can find something at Home Depot for $10 or less.

This is what I have http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...63433_-1_11355

I planned on mounting it on the firewall now that I have some free space from removing my A/C System. One of these days I will figure a way to hide all this fn tubing that is cluttering the 2v motors.

that would work. just driver's side? I'm surprised mine does this. I only go up through the gears 2 or 3 times and I can smell it. It's not a hi-po N/A motor or charged.

this guy installed his on the pass side. should we use one on both sides?

I have an oil seperator on the driver's side and a breather on the passenger side. I did it once I started to use the spray and I was surprised how much oil it actually catches

what would happen if I put a breather on both sides and capped off the holes in the intake and plenum?

does engine PUSH the oil out of the valve or does it get siphoned out by the pull of the air in the intake?

    im no expert...

but on my last 3 stangs i removed the pcv and ran breathers on both VC's...never had any oil problems.

what does the pcv/hose system actually do? i can understand the pressure release, but I'm guessing shoving the oil back into the intake is just an emissions thing?

Jared, were those all pushrod motors? Like Ares said above, on these ohc motors, the oil is really getting flung around inside the vc. If the oil is actually getting pushed out of the vc, the breathers would turn into an oily mess in no time. I'm guessing this is the case and why folks use the air/oil separator system.

sweet! did you have clearance issues on the pass side under the intake tube?

EDIT: can anybody else chime in on the pros/cons for putting breathers on both sides? thanks.

The positive pressure in the crank case is mostly caused by gasses getting past the rings in the cylinders I believe. If you don't have much blowby then you probably won't have much pressure buildup and no need to hook it up to the intake. On my 5.0 I had a really bad oil leak at the rear main seal and it ended up being caused by my lack of a PCV system. Hooked up a hose from the passenger side valve cover to PCV port on the base of the carb and the oil leak almost completely disappeared. Not saying that you'll need a PCV system, just saying that there are cases where they're needed.
