    Gear ratio question

I will be rebuilding my differential due to some noisy carrier bearings. I have 3.73s in there now. It is a Procharged SOHC 5 speed that makes 406 rwhp. As you can see, it is not a monster but it is peppy. I am wondering if I should step up to 4.10s. I am not going to drag race it again (I don't think), but I am wondering if there would be a noticeable difference in the old Levis meter. Thoughts?

I know some folks love the gear but if you're not racing I'd say drop it down to 3.55's or stay with the 3.73's.

I love the 3.50's in my '66 with the 5-speed (approx 480 rwhp). Still can't keep the tires from spinning.

I'd stick with the 3.73's for your purposes.

    Don't fear the gear .... I didn't see 4.30 discussed, so 4.10 FTW ....

what rear tire are you using that will help determine what gear , with a 28" I too would go with 4.10s anything less 3.73s

I'm with bob. For how much you drive that car I'd do 4.10's. Car will be faster on the street too.

I think you mean to say quicker. Not faster.

For a street car that isn't going to see track time and be chasing numbers, I would keep the 3.73. if you just drive around town and like showing off to your buddies, bump to a 4.10. The seat of pants feel will be amazing for sure. Especially with the 25.7" tall tire I'm sure you're running.

My 98 4 valve car was both quicker, and faster with the 4.30's vs the 3.90's. Whole different animal, but hard to say until tested.

Exactly!! I'm happy with my 4.11's in the Monte now. I just don't have any track times on it. Tell you what though. From the tired stock 305 with a 3.73 rear to the small block that's in it now with the 4.11...it's a night and day difference.

I love the 4.10s I had installed this summer. Definitely woke my Mach 1 up from the 3.55s but it's N/A and is probably staying that way. I do see a lot go back to a 3.55 or 3.73 when they add a power adder on other forums like SVTP and the Mach 1 registry.

2000GT has a SOHC, which isn't as rev-happy as the DOHC. I still say stick with 3.73's

I think I am leaning towards staying with the 3.73s. Like I said before, it is not a monster but it traction is tough to come by as it is. Plus, It hasn't seen the track in about 8 years and I am just enjoying it as a cruiser so I am no longer after a number as I was in the past. That doesn't mean I will not change my mind at least 20 times before I actually do the work.

Just leave what you have in it. If my car was still on street and never saw track time. I would still leave the 4.10 in it. Was just a much better car to drive, especially highway.

I have a supercharged 00 GT making 415whp with 4.10's in it currently. Its nice for the track, gets out of the hole like a rocket ship. If I didn't go to the track I would have 3.73's in it, at 75mph with the 4.10's its creeping toward 2900-3000rpm with a 25.5" tire in 5th gear.
