    My kitchen project

Here is what I've been up to this year instead of building a car. Wife waiting patiently for 13 years in this house for a better kitchen. I knew it was going to take me a long time and I didn't particularly want to do it at all; to the point I started just looking for another house.
To help with this project I paid someone to do a couple of the tasks. I hired a contractor to lay the 3/4 x 5 1/4 hardwood floor over the whole downstairs except the bathroom. The same guy I also paid to demo most of the plaster lath before the floors went down. That's certainly not difficult, but he said $10/hr to do it so of course I said go for it! I also hired a guy to finish the drywall. The rest of the project was on me: building walls, electric, plumbing, hanging drywall, cabinet installs, tile, etc. Oh and the granite company installed their own stuff.
Cabinets are from Ikea. Floor and most other stuff is from Home Depot. Some things like tile from Lowes. Countertops from Bad Lizard (I'd definitely recommend).
Upper cabinets are 15" deep and 40" tall.

    Some in-progress photos.

During the project while doing some wiring I found some significant water damage to the wall of an addition. Seems the person who added the addition years ago didn't believe in house wrap or V channels for siding, so water was free to enter in the corner where the siding met.

    Skip ahead. Way ahead.

Kitchen is 95% complete. Still some trim work and kick panels to cut, and more moulding and minor tile work on the smaller stuff. I don't have much interest in using a wet saw below freezing, so some of that may wait until Spring.

Frame of reference for cabinet heights. My wife is 5' 9". We have a small ladder to reach the upper shelves.
Smiley face because wife would kill me for posting the awkward face she's making.

Fridge got some cabinets, too. Cabinet to the left is huge 80" pantry.

More cabinets and some extra counter space. This is the wall I had to rebuild due to water damage.
I'll add a 4" strip of backsplash here eventually, and cabinet moulding. Kick panels are on but not pictured.

Now I have a much better backdrop for my alcohol photos.

The wife's Christmas present (other than the kitchen). A solid hardwood island for even more countertop space.

Nice work! We will probably do ours this year, but just countertops and backsplash, not the whole deal.

My step mom is doing same thing as my dad started to redo their kitchen until he fell and broke his heel before Thanksgiving.

What made you choose granite over the other choices?

What made you choose ikea for cabinets over other carrier offerings?

Looks great....I am in the planning stages of some kitchen refreshening myself.

Quartz from Ikea was our first choice, then learned they no longer deliver to WV. I thougt granite was too expensive, but learned there are different grades, and this happens to be the lowest and cheaper than the Ikea quartz. Grade in granite refers to how common it is, not quality. So this was cheaper because it's of common rock.
Our friends recently installed Ikea cabinets before us. They are a lot of space for the price, have some cool features, and a 25 year warranty. They thicknesses of sides and shelves are 3/4" vs. 1/2" found elsewhere. Handles/pulls we bought from Amazon.

For anyone looking to do countertops, for our 2 bathrooms we got granite from Steel City Granite. Each one was 7' long. We picked the slabs we liked and paid about $1700 installed - total for both. Gorgeous stuff and price was better / variety much better than the big box stores. I can provide contact info if anyone is interested.

Forgot to mention that while most parts are made in a scandinavian country, the cabinets themselves are made in the US.

    Thanks for sharing......

I am hoping to get underway around mid summer.

Our cabinets are still really nice but the Mrs. wants white.....going to investigate refinishing them in white vs new.

I've been contemplating tackling a room myself. I've never done any of it but I guess as long as I do some research I can teach myself (hopefully not an expensive lesson lol) I'm pretty handy with tools etc. I'll probably try to tackle a room upstairs first before the kitchen though lol. Plus this will be a good opportunity to aquire cool tools I don't currently own.

No issues with the ice maker, other than the general design when I open the freezer and ice falls out the back.

Ah yes, the ice maker in the door. I opted to not get that model because of the potential issues. I bought the cheapest wet saw that Home Depot had, and it worked just fine. The glass doesn't cut perfectly smoothly, so it's a bit jagged, but nothing noticeable after it's installed.

That’s one of the things I was concerned about, it has glass and aluminum in it
