Here is what I've been up to this year instead of building a car. Wife waiting patiently for 13 years in this house for a better kitchen. I knew it was going to take me a long time and I didn't particularly want to do it at all; to the point I started just looking for another house.
To help with this project I paid someone to do a couple of the tasks. I hired a contractor to lay the 3/4 x 5 1/4 hardwood floor over the whole downstairs except the bathroom. The same guy I also paid to demo most of the plaster lath before the floors went down. That's certainly not difficult, but he said $10/hr to do it so of course I said go for it! I also hired a guy to finish the drywall. The rest of the project was on me: building walls, electric, plumbing, hanging drywall, cabinet installs, tile, etc. Oh and the granite company installed their own stuff.
Cabinets are from Ikea. Floor and most other stuff is from Home Depot. Some things like tile from Lowes. Countertops from Bad Lizard (I'd definitely recommend).
Upper cabinets are 15" deep and 40" tall.
Some in-progress photos.
During the project while doing some wiring I found some significant water damage to the wall of an addition. Seems the person who added the addition years ago didn't believe in house wrap or V channels for siding, so water was free to enter in the corner where the siding met.
Skip ahead. Way ahead.
Kitchen is 95% complete. Still some trim work and kick panels to cut, and more moulding and minor tile work on the smaller stuff. I don't have much interest in using a wet saw below freezing, so some of that may wait until Spring.
Frame of reference for cabinet heights. My wife is 5' 9". We have a small ladder to reach the upper shelves.
Smiley face because wife would kill me for posting the awkward face she's making.
Fridge got some cabinets, too. Cabinet to the left is huge 80" pantry.
More cabinets and some extra counter space. This is the wall I had to rebuild due to water damage.
I'll add a 4" strip of backsplash here eventually, and cabinet moulding. Kick panels are on but not pictured.
Now I have a much better backdrop for my alcohol photos.
The wife's Christmas present (other than the kitchen). A solid hardwood island for even more countertop space.
