    Project Silver Bullet

After many months of downtime this S197 is in need of a major driveline upgrade. After much deliberation the decision was made to retire the MT-82 in lieu of transmission sourced from G-Force transmission. That was the easy part in a sense. Enter the G-101A. This was the first option. This transmission is a 4 speed and is legal in the NMRA Coyote Stock class.. Which made sense, at first. But after coming to terms with the amount of time required to attend the races let alone being competitive within that class another direction seemed more appealing. The G-Force 5R. This is a 5 speed trans with 5th being 1:1. After consulting with G-Force the gear ratios were selected for 1-4 gears while taking some factors into consideration including ring and pinion ratio, vehicle weight, whp and the characteristics of the engine rpm band. There are some specifics the customer can option as far as input shaft spline count, shifter set back and internal modifications which reduce parasitic losses. The option to execute the shifts clutchless is also an option. That box got a checkmark.

Now clutch selection was next on the agenda. Spec got the call. A coyote stock set up seemed like the way to go. An aluminum pressure plate is an option that will free up some rotating weight in the driveline. A QuickTime bell housing will mate the block and trans.

The installation is being handled by Booze Brothers Racing out of Marion PA. Two factors determined that choice. They have a very competitive Coyote Stock car. And their reputation within the NMRA. I was in search for a clean installation and the knowledge to make the best decisions for what was in front of them. This is the first time I farmed out work and let somebody other than a friend and I spin the wrenches. Which is necessary because of the amount of time I invest in work.

Here are some pics of what's going on with it:

Are these parts going on the wall or on the list after the two step installation? Fall air is coming, we need to get all three out as Mason again.

Got some pics today of the current state of the work. Clearancing for the linkage rods required some trimming of the trans tunnel. A filler panel that creates the necessary room was fabricated.

A fabricated driveshaft loop found its way under the s197 chassis. Next on the list. Measuring for a carbon fiber driveshaft. Removing the 4.10 ring and pinion in favor of a 5.13/5.14 gear. And converting the hydraulic actuation of the pressure plate to a cable actuated set up.
