    87-93 Stock Longblock 5.0L -Recipe-

Getting a 5.0L into the coveted 12 sec e.t. is not as hard as it may seem. To attain sub-13 sec. e.t.s start with a 5-speed version of the 5.0L. Mix in a lightweight version (coupe), well thought out bolt-ons, traction e.g. slicks, and aggressive driving.

I have compiled a list based on facts, not generalizations and assumptions that has the potential to propel a stock long-blocked fox body into the 12's. A good tune is paramount in the quest to reach this goal.

    - 26 x 8.5 x 15 slicks (can mount on turbines/10 holes and retain quad shock)

    - 3.73, 4.10, 4.30 gear (select ratio depending upon tire height selection)

    - Headers (long tubes>short tubes)

    - Off road H or X (may need to replace to pass emissions test where applicable)

    - Under-drive pulleys (may eliminate need for these if serpentine belt is eliminated, use caution if employing this mod and use at track only)

    - Eliminate factory air silencer

    - At a mininum use a K&N panel replacement filter

    - Stock T.B. and M.A.F. will work. (track testing showed no loss of e.t. or gain in MPH when switching M.A.F. -same day testing-

    - Remove front sway bar (helps with weight transfer)

    - Remove stock clutch fan (*if* using underdrives)

    - Short-belt (*if* underdrives are used)

    - Advance timing (13-14 degrees is a good start)

    - Adjustable fuel pressure regulator

    - Remove unwanted weight ( you be the judge, what do you want to eliminate, *remember these small c.i.d. engines do not like to lug weight, removing approx. 100 lbs. of weight nets a mph increase)

    - Practice, practice, and more practice. (If you are afraid to break something your leaving precious e.t. on the table)

    Some additional mods to consider:

    1. Synthetic lubricants throughout
    2. Aftermarket rear control arms
    3. Sub-frame connectors
    4. Increasing air pressure in front tires to decrease rolling resistance
    5. Aftermarket shifter
    6. Battery relocated to rear of hatch/trunk
    7. Air bag in passenger rear coil
    8. Light weight wheels
    9. Ice upper plenum (gains of 6-8 H.P. here -dyno tested-)

Mods that produce minimal gains if any:

    1. off-the-shelf chips
    2. aftermarket ignitions including expensive spark plugs
    3. bigger injectors (contrary to popular belief upgrading injectors will *not* produce more power)

CAN WE MAKE THIS A STICKY?

    Short Block

    Long Block

Its just how complete your engine is, its not a style of engine.
