MSD box or distibutor??? Whats your guess

The vert never seems to want to get me from point A to point B without a towtruck. It is loseing spark. Brian put a new coil on it and it seemed to be fixed, but it's starting up again. I wnet over all the wiring and made sure there's no bad connection problems. It's good. It will be going down the road just cruising and it starts to die. If you let it sit for a few minutes it will fire back up and run. The MSD 6al was on the car with the last motor and didn't give any problems, the MSD billet distributor is new to the car ( but I believe used) so I'm leaning towards it. I've already had someone very knowledgeable suggest the pick up in the distributor, so before I start throwing parts at it I figured I'd get all the ideas I can.

just unplug the box when it does it, and plug it back in like stock. if it fires and runs, then there's your problem. it could also be your TFI module on the distributor. I would check those things. Also i'm assuming you checked your distributor cap for cracks and whatnot :)

Well i bought a brand new msd dist. for my car put it in, and could not get it to run right for the life of me. I thought man, can't be the dist, its brand new. tried everything, new plugs, wires, then one day put the stock dist in and it ran great again. The dist was defective.

The car is no longer EFI so there really isn't much that handles the ignition now. Just MSD box, coil, and distibutor.

My 85 did the same thing and it was the MSD box. Was the biggest PITA ever. I basically replaced everything else I could, then figured it was the MSD box so I sent it back to MSD because it was still under warranty. They sent it back and said it was fine. So I continued to throw parts at it. Then one day I was at the parts store and just said F it and bought a new MSD box and all was well. The problems sounds similar. Mine would sometimes take a while to start back up, but always by the next day it would fire up.

well if you haven't found the problem yet, check your plug wires, see if maybe spark is jumping off a bad wire, like near the spark plug boot, works best in the dark so you can see. I have seen this happen before as well.

Usually when the box goes they don't work ever again. I would replace the TFI module. Those are the symptoms for a bad one when they get hot they quit firing until they cool down.

I had the same problem, it was the pick up. it would run start to die, and if i floored it it would usually keep running.
