I made my debut passes at PRP last night

After running my car at the last few FLD's I was staring to wonder how fast, or more accurately how slow my car was. I was really starting to think something was wrong with it as I kept losing to my dad (he has a mid 11 second car). On a whim I decided to take it to the track just to see what kind of trap speeds I was seeing, and thus help give me an idea of how much more, or less power I was making than before. It had been over 3 years since I ran at PRP, and over 2 years since I had drag raced my car, so I was a little rusty to say the least. I was going to go all out with skinnies, et streets, etc but I decided to just go up as is so I could get a baseline. I had removed the pass. seat the night before to make room for my ET streets, but in the end I decided not to take them. Other than the seat the car was full weight. I had my 17" wheels all around, all the interior was in the car, sway bar was intact, and I had a full tank of fuel which I never have when I race as I usually go with 1/4 tank. My previous best time ever at PRP was a 12.4 at 109.Xmph in the cool fall weather with no pass. seat, no rear seat, removed spare/jack/trunk carpet and plastic, bogart skinnies up front, ET streets on stock 16" mustang wheels out back, and 1/4 tank of fuel.

The weather was total crap last night as I'm sure most of you know. Surprisingly I got 5 runs in and that is with missing the 1st run of the night since I got there late. I have to say thanks to Mike for coming out and helping with my tune! My ET's absolutely SUCKED, but the MPH was what I was after. Here are my runs:

    1st pass: 13.03 at 110.90mph with a 1.86 60'
    2nd pass: 13.43 at 106.72 with a 1.90 60' I missed 3rd and 4th DOH!
    3rd pass: 13.079 at 112.90 with a 1.89 60'

Up to this point I was having trouble getting the car to go into 2nd gear quickly, my datalogs showed that it was taking a whopping 6+tenths for the 1-2 gear change! On the next two runs though I got it to go in a little smoother.

    4th pass: 12.90 at 113.40 with a 1.94 60'
    5th pass: 12.89 at 114.02 with a 2.0 60'!!!

The DA for this run was 2550 based on the weather, corrected it came out to 12.5 at 117mph!!! I don't use corrected numbers but to say I'm happy is an understatement!

I can't believe I beat my best MPH at PRP by almost 5mph and my best MPH ever by nearly 2mph at full weight and at PRP no less. My best mph of 112.51 was done at cecil county in mineshaft air conditions!

Here's an AEM screenshot of my 12.8 at 114mph pass. Make sure your volume is on as you can hear the car too!

I can't wait now to see what this car will do with more tuning, outfitted in track form, in better weather conditions and at a track like cecil. Dad better watch his back!!! LOL!

Lifting on the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts, 100% on the 2-3 exchange? 117-118 should be in the bag at C.C.! That AEM even records how long it takes to execute a shift? Does it record how long the load is not present?

I was wondering if anyone would catch that! Actually Joe, I did lift on the 2-3 shift but for whatever reason it doesn't show it in this screen shot. I actually went back and looked at my logs after seeing that to see if I did powershift 2-3 and I did not as I can see the load and throttle dip. I guess it was just a glitch in the recording. Joe, the AEM is AWESOME! With the logs I can measure how long it takes to shift and you can see the load change down to a hundreth of a second! Off topic- I tried to call you several time after getting your PM, but the number I have must be old. Can you PM me a new number, I'd like to talk to you about it, and a few other things!

Ed- I'm getting closer to being able to put the turbo on. I now have the MSD ignition, AEM, and shortblock. I still need a complete fuel system, a new cam, and to replace my heads with something a little bigger. I may do a fox TB conversion next though as my 65mm unit has got to be a restriction at this point. I'm VERY excited though seeing how well this thing is already running NA that I can't imagine what it's going to do with my turbo kit on it!

Here's the combo for those that didn't know. Its a mismatched combo if there ever was one and I'm very surprised its running as well as it is.

-Dart block based 331 with internally balanced Scat forged components
-8.9:1 compression with these heads and gaskets
    -65mm FMS TB
    -box stock holley systemax intake
-box stock pedestal mount AFR 165 heads with upgraded valve springs/retainers/locks
-FTI custom cam that was designed for my old stock 302 shortblock setup
    -shorty 1-5/8" FMS headers
    -2.5" offroad X pipe
-2.5" dynomax welded race magnum mufflers
    -24lb injectors
    -190lph pump
    -AEM stand alone
    -TKO trans
    -alum. flywheel
    -alum DS
-31 spline axles and eaton diff.
-17X8 bogart RR10 wheels with 245-45-17 nitto tires
    -17X10.5 RR10 wheels with 315-35-17 nitto DR's
    -PA Racing tubular K member/A arms/coil overs
    -stock UCA's
    -GW LCA's
    -strange shocks and struts

That's exactly what I thought too, but after speaking with my buddy Jason at AFR and Ed C. at flowtechinduction they both want me to run the 185's for my car and my goals. If I didn't trust both like I do I'd go aginst the grain and get the 205's, but I know these guys wouldn't lead me astray and they both know more than me when it comes to this as they do it everyday sucessfully. If I was going to run a solid roller high rpm NA setup, then the 205's would be going on. I don't want to spin this thing above 6500 simply because I'm too lazy to change valve springs every season or two. I have a goal of 130MPH trap speeds which I hope will be PLENTY for me, and the 185's and <6500rpm shifts should do it for me with everything else I have planned. Right now I have a T64E turbo and I feel that it is going to be my biggest limiting factor as its only rated for 700hp MAX. The plan as of now is to put it on to "cut my teeth on" so to speak, and then step up to a T76 down the road. It will be a while yet though before I can afford the rest of the parts needed to put the turbo on, so in the mean time I'll get to ring this thing out NA and see just how far it'll go.

Maybe I'll sell you mine. I figure about that time I may be ready for the 88mm. :D

BTW, I'm also considering Ed Curtis to do my next cam. Are you staying with a Hydraulic Roll or going the Solid Roller route?

LOL! I wish I had the funds when Mark had it for sale! How is your car coming along?

I HIGHLY suggest Ed. Most people either love him or hate him and although he can come across a little rude and arogant at times on the net he is truely a great guy that will do anything to help you out once you are a customer of his. He's helped my dad and I out tremendously over the years, even on stuff that had no relation to the parts we purchased from him.

I plan to stay with a hydraulic roller, it was the reason I went with the dart sportsman block over the iron eagle. I think I will make more than enough power with it, and it should require less maintenance which is key for me since I HATE working on my car. LOL!

    Congrats Paul!:

I left when they started doing that Gamblers race thing....The reason I didn't answer the phone last night when I got home was cause the cell was dead and the power was out in my neighborhood...yea I know my luck!

Stick with the AEM tuning...the more you do it..the more you will love it I still want to work out the Check engine light thing...maybe you can bring it down or at least see if the bulb is burned out?

    thanks

Must be something with the cam guys. I heard that jay Allen is a real prick! As for my car, slowly but surely:

    http://www.steelcitystangs.com/forum...ead.php?t=1422

I found a place on ebay of all places that has great prices on aluminum tubing, so I'll be getting everything mocked up here shortly and then pull it all back out to repaint the car. Just takes time and money. Money mainly! :D
