what does it take to put a tremec 5speed or t-56 into a 95gt to replace a t-5?
what does it take to put a tremec 5speed or t-56 into a 95gt to replace a t-5?
Tremec 5 speed can be as simple as changing tranny and bellhousing. T-56 will involve tranny, bellhousing, crossmember and driveshaft at a minimum. Clutch will have to be changed if you are going with a 26-spline option on either of the tranny's.
Of course, if you don't have any cash for gas, why bother worrying about droping $1,400+ to change a tranny?
well he is looking for an upgrade for his gt.. Any suggestions and he doesnt want to spend more than 1k in it. He doesnt want the t-5 anymore
Tell him to look into G force internals for his T5. You may have to get a new clutch disc that is 26 spline, but the rest of the stuff would remain the same as he has now. I have a TKO and I don't really like it. If I had to do it all over again I'd take a good look into the G force stuff before getting another TKO.
To swap in a TKO into a 94-95 you need:
-TKO trans
-tremec bellhousing
-dust shield for the bell housing from a fox body
-2 shorter bell hosuing bolts for the top two holes in the bell housing
-93-older clutch fork
-driveshaft spacer
-1/8" thick piece of steel to go between the trans mount and the tranny since the stock exhaust hanger needs removed
-synchromesh transmission fluid
-26 spline clutch disc
-new drive shaft yoke

Or he could look for an older Tremmic. I have a 3550 in the notch. I think I paid 1200 for the trans, clutch, shifter, and SFI bell from Ed. I love thing compaired to a TKO. I cant shift a TKO without getting pissed.
I also have a 3550 in my notch. It seems pretty strong.
The only reason I went with a TKO over a 3550 is because the main shafts in the 3550 are the same as a T5. I had bent 3 mainshafts in my T5 before getting the TKO, so I knew the 3550 wasn't for me.
coralcoupe1993- LOL! Stand at the 1/8th mile mark at the track and you'll see me yelling at the damn tranny as I go by as it pisses me off too! Its weird, my dad's TKO shifts fine with no problems what so ever, mine requires He-man to be driving for it to go into gear quickly. I actually called about getting the 1-2 pro-shifted in my trans yesterday, I may remove every other tooth from my synchros though first if its not too hard to do.

the 3550 is what came in the 99-04 gts correct?
any imput on a t-45 out of a sn-95 cobra?
The 99-04 gt's had the Tremec T-45 or the 3650 depending on the year. As far as the earlier cobra i believe the T-45 would still use a different bellhousing than the T-5. Someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong since am an automatic guy.

there is a 99 cobra t-45 for sale here.. How big of an upgrade is it over a t-5?
I have no idea how you would put a T45 behind a 302. I'm sure somebody somewhere has done it, but I don't think it'd be much of an upgrade. I think the bell housing in an intergrated part to the trans unlike the T5. I'm sure the modular guys can clarify that though.
