*Help* In Need of Turbo Know It Alls

ok so heres the deal. i found a turbo up for sale on 3.8mustang.com. now im not a genius when it comes to turbos.. so this is where i need somebody's help. the price seemed to good to pass up. i still have not purchased it as im waiting for pictures. he said its in good condition no shaft play.....i asked my buddy who is into turbos and he said it would be way way too small. i wanna get it for the 5.0 here are the specs the guy told me---garrett turbo T3/To4E .48 A/F .63 Turbine capable of 650hp. my friend also said that that turbo cannot be capable of 650hp he said it sounds like its for a smaller displacement engine. any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

That would typicall be used in a Twin Turbo application for a 5.0. I would have to agree that it is too small for a Single Turbo 5.0 application.

yeah im with Ed. try to get a pair of turbos off a Grand National.

they are .60/.63 T3's

indeed that is too small for a single turbo setup...each one of my turbos is bigger than that

I agree with what everyone has said. not only is 650hp a bit optimistic for a T04E compressor housing, but a T3 hotside is going to be too small for a 5.0 liter engine nomatter what turbine wheel you manage to stuff into that housing.

Either find a second one with identical specs for a twin setup, or shop for something bigger.

thanks guys for the heads up.. ill have to think about what i wanna do.. might just buy this one and try to find a second one depending on how hard it is to get my hands on another one for a decent price

If i were you, i'd wait, unless the turbo is a good manufacturer that you feel damn confident that you'll find another identical one.... And when it comes to good manufacturer, don't get a cheapo - i can't speak from experience, but spent a LONG time researching in the FI section of LS1tech and the cheap turbos are bad news...

But, as suggested in the thread for PhillySRT4, i'd suggest waiting to find a larger turbo --- maybe something like a T4 frame, T-76GTS ... maybe around .96 A/R or a little smaller with only 302 c.i.... then do a nice single turbo kit... much easier and should still spool in the mid 3000 rpms range i would imagine.... however, too many variables come into plaly to make an assumption on that...

ok ok.. well personally i would prefer to do a single turbo anyways. thats the thing i just didn't know what would be a good size or brand of turbo. and it would be easier and less expensive than the twin turbo setup.it would be nice to find the best turbo for my application so i know what to start looking for.

"the best turbo" is a relative thing... do you want something that spools quickly but only makes power to 6000-6500 rpms, or do you want something that might take a little longer to spool up, but will make power to the moon?

brand? Turbonetics, an actual REAL Garrett, not the ebay fake Garretts, Precision, etc...
And i see a decent amount of ppl using these KKR turbos... theyre' australian turbos i think... very reasonably priced, but dont think they've been out long enough to get a good feel or feedback on their quality

actually yeah something that spools quick and makes power up to 6000 or 6500 would actually be good cause my car will redline somewhere around there anyways.

No it isn't, but any turbo kit can be made to work on a carb. engine. It will just take a carb hat and a little rework of the inlet tubing.
