    Turbo failure

I'm sure this made some noise last night when it flew apart. I spent half the day changing the turbo and the other half picking the pieces out of the aftercooler (Cat D11N) I never saw one come apart this way, about 3 years ago one broke in the middle of the turbo and the exhaust side made it into the Muffler (4 foot trip)

Hopefully the rebuild will be cheaper than a new one.

I thought I broke a turbo every way possible this year, but I never broke a compressor wheel in half i've ripped all the blades off, broke a few shafts in half, and been on the fishing expedition for a turbine wheel in the muffler. Ever time I broke a shaft, I usually ended up with about 2 quarts of oil in my intercooler too.

You could spin it freely with your fingers but it has "a lot" end play lol. I got a hand full of pieces out of the aftercooler and the inner air filter was full of aluminum too, it's the biggest mess I've seen a turbo make.

Sounds you know whats up, but be EXTREMELY diligent cleaning that stuff out of the intake side, I would even toss that air filter if it was me. I lost a turbo (after loosing a turbo) to FOD to the compressor, I swear it was clean, but there had to be bits in the intake side by the nicks on the compressor wheel. The upside, most intercoolers act like a filter and keep the junk out of the engine.

This is not the worst I did, but one of my favorites ;) I killed every mosquito for about three miles radius around PRP. It also spun freely afterward :D
