Thumbs up Phil's new Dyno results... With the 16V Volvo Head 2.3

"Phil just called me with the news of his Volvo head XR.

His new recorded HP is 683HP/509TQ@ the wheels!! this was up till 7.5kRPM He was telling me that above that the wheels were spinning and started doing a burnout on the dyno! How freakin crazy! The Dyno guys were saying that he has (with traction) around 720HP. Phil's car is built to go to 9k RPM "

WOW! Post up the dyno sheet if you can. I'd like to see what the curve looks like.

How difficult is it to use a Volvo head on a 2.3?

Damn! The more I read these post about the little 2.3 that could, the more I regret not keeping my '91LX and doing the 2.3T swap I always wanted to do.

    register!

When i built my Pinto it's set up for the Volvo swap..
Everton Biggs in Florida made 962Hp with a 16V Volvo 2.3 engine. The head is the key to the Big #. There's a Volvo 16V head in the hands of IRL master head porter and the flow #s should be amazing!

That's easy and you can go to the Ford store and buy one.

Here's the Yahoo group..It's not that big of a deal than it's made out to be..

    http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/2300-16V/

"The head flows very well in stock form, I was impressed to say the least. ARCA competion, probably not ...but there is definitely some room for improvement. I hope to test the exhaust flow in the near future and I will post results from that too. The following tests were all intake flow comparisons. 1/2" radius was used and the cylinder wall shrouding was simulated with a 3.810" bore (.030" over bore.) 28" depression. I gave the volvo head the benefit of the doubt and centered it over the bore, but in reality it will not center on a 2.3 ford block. I doubt the shrouding is significant enough to disrupt flow in stock form though.

The stock head was flown on cylinder #3. The ported iron head is one of my personal heads. It was maximized for a high lift high rpm application, and the low lift flow would have been slightly better with a port/valve combination optimized for low and mid lift flow. No epoxy or welding. It's close enough to give you an idea though....

    Here we go:

    Stock Iron D port/Boport Iron D port/Volvo 16V

    .050"_27.6___32.6____42.3
    .100"_56.8___64.2____85.1
    .150"_75.7___108.7___123.9
    .200"_98.7___142.7___164.1
    .250"_118.4__173.8___198.5
    .300"_131.0__193.3___219.2
    .350"_138.1__210.8___226.4
    .400"_145.3__225.7___229.6
    .450"_149.2__234.1___231.6
    .500"_153.1__238.7___234.1
    .550"_156.3__240.6___235.4*
    .600"_158.2__241.3___235.4
    .650"________242.6
    .700"________244.5
    .750"________245.2

I will continue working on the 16V volvo and update with new flow findings in the future. In stock form I think it would be an excellent upgrade over a ported iron head. I assume maximum valve lift you could run would be .400-.450", even at that lift it is flowing a solid 230cfm. I will post ARCA intake flow in the near future as well.

paul you have to add some material to the back of the volvo head and run some oil lines i think its just scary how close this thing is to being almost a bolt on

Nice, maybe I'll cut my 4.6 in half and make two 2.3's with 2 turbos and make 1200+hp;) . Them little 2.3's are really impressive for sure.
