Car Company Does the Right Thing

My daily driver is a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5S. I bought it new because it had the best combination of features for the buck & a roomy interior. It has ~94,000 mile. Over the past year or so the car began using oil at an ever increasing rate. Lately the car has felt sluggish at certain speeds. So I did some research on a couple of Nissan sites and found a thread about the cat nearest the motor disintegrating and being sucked back into the motor through exhaust reversion.

I spoke to Mark (U1arunit) about since he works for Nissan. I removed the cat, which is welded into a nice stainless 4 into 1 header. Sure as hell, the cat had gone to pieces inside the exhaust. When I had the car at West Hills Nissan for other warranty work they ran a compression test dry & wet. Sure as shit, the car is down on compression. Ceramic particles inside the cylinder does wonders for ring seal. They had me call the 1-800-Nissan1 customer support line & make a request for motor replacement. I had to send them evidence of oil changes & maintenance. I've waited about 2-1/2 weeks and was starting to thing they'd blown me off.

Well, this afternoon I got a call from the service write at West Hills nissan that Nissan had decided to replace my long block!!! That was quite a surprise. I'm sure I'll spend a few hundred on belts, hoses & stuff but, I'm impressed that they stepped up & did the right thing. They said I could drop it off & pick it up at the end of the day if I want.

I just wanted to give cudos to Nissan for stepping up.

If it was still under warranty (which it sounds like his car is) then i'm sure they would.

That's nice to hear Mark! The same cat problem is found of the toyota Mr2 Spyder's like my wife has. The catalytic material begins to break down and gets sucked back into the combustion chamber and all sorts of bad things happen. The only mod I have done to my wife's car is to gut the "pre-cats" or the cats closest to the exhaust port of the head. These pre-cats are within a few inches of the exhaust port which is why they are such a problem.

Actually Mark's car is out of warranty. It has 95,xxx miles on it, or even more now since we tried to get his Goodwill Warranty approved.

Seems like it was in warranty 2.5 weeks ago?

But you would know if it was under warranty.....I agree though...that is very impressive for them to replace it free of charge.

    But i still wouldn't buy one. :D

I mistyped there, it was in for a recall, not a warranty repair. There have or had a 5/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. So I'm just a few miles beyond that!

Don't get Sean started about his closed minded hatred of foreign cars please.

There are some folks that won't buy an import no matter how good or bad they are.

    I see...

I actually looked at the big three when I bought the Altima. There was nothing with the room, comfort, features and drivability of the Altima. The Altima is/was made in Smyrna, TN. I just saw the massive Nissan USA headquarters building going up a couple of weeks ago.

I could get into a pissing match here as I feel as passionate about my opinion as some others but we are getting off topic.

Remember.. Opinion is fact until challenged and I am just glad that Nissan is stepping up for you, Mark.

    Well,

I picked up my Altima friday night on the way home. They did the complete motor change-out for no-charge. The car feels so much stronger, for a n/a 2.5L that is. No cold start-up rattle or smelly burnt oil smell.

Thanks to service techs at West Hills Nissan, our Mark Herrly and Kurt in service for getting the job done right.

It goes without saying that I'm glad that we got to help you out Mark. Like one of Nissan's old catch phrases used to say.. "Enjoy the ride!".
