Firewall Adjusters??

I am going to be replacing the clutch soon and am looking to go with an adjustable cable/quadrant & Ford Racing or King Cobra kit. And I need to know how reliable the firewall adjusters are. I always had the advantage of putting the '90 up in the air to make adjustments. No longer have access to a lift, so I'm wondering do they work? Do they back off on their own? Or should I just stay away from them? Pros/Cons

I have used them before and I have had instances where it would back off on it's own. I'm still a fan of just using the adjustable cable instead. Only diference is like you said, you have to get under the car to adjust it.

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. In most cases, once you get it set the way you want it on the bottom, there really isn't much need to adjust any further. And a decent set of ramps should be adequate to get to the cable from the ground.

ive had them on all my cars and never had any problems with them backin off. i put one on every car i get.

keep your stock cable and if it needs replaced make sure you put another stocker back in there...you don't want or need an adjustable cable. i have used many different firewall adjusters over the years, i didn't like any of them until the fiore piece which is no longer made to my knowledge. here is a new and great option...http://www.uprproducts.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1040

i am not a fan of upr but this is a pretty sweet piece and i have installed several of these...lou stocks these at LMM. as far as the quadrant goes there are plenty to pick from, how you use and drive your car should be the deciding factor...good luck either way

I don't think firewall adjusters were even available back when I put the adjustable cable on the 85 and I didn't go with the firewall adjuster on the cobra because I didn't want to deal with the clearance issues around the cam cover.

i have seen and heard of way to many failures to give them a shot or recommend them to anyone. the stock cables seem to be stronger and stand up to the abuse much better so i have always stayed away from them. im sure someone has broken a stock cable but i don't know anybody who has, i've put them through some serious abuse with aggressive quadrants and have never had one fail or damage.

The Fiore adjuster is what I run. I like them since they have the little detent ball that sits in the groove to keep it from moving on you.

The Steeda, UPR, and Fiore quads are all good. Some have a faster ramp profile as well.

I just use the stock cable.

im sure on a street car, less the power shifting...it will stay together. for aggressive street driving, aggressive quadrants, track abuse etc...i just felt like if it wasn't broke don't fix it after all the broken aftermarket cables!!!

the new upr extreme is basically a knock-off the fiore piece which i used as well. i actually like the upr piece a little better...

Fair enough. I've seen both stock and aftermarket ones break, but would also tend to believe the stockers are probably a little stronger in most cases. I had the stock one on my 85 go bad, but like Ed said, that was just due to header heat and not the cable itself actually breaking.

FYI - I have a UPR tripple hook quadrant and firewall adjuster I bought off someone here for sale. The quadrant looks to be new, the adjuster looks a little used. I'm not using them, I think I have $35.00 in it.

I run the stock cable with a steeda quadrant, UPR firewall adjuster, and pedal height adjuster I haven't had any problems. I want to upgrade to the Fiore adjuster but like Mike said, not sure it's available anymore. It has a ball bearing face where the top of the cable meets it so it is easier to adjust, and doesn't bind when adjusting it. I think it's much easier to make the adjustments by popping the hood rather than crawling under the car!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback. I am not 100% certain but I think I used a BBK adj. cable the 1st time around and it lasted well over 100,000 miles. So I'm not too worried about how well they are made. My main concern was the firewall adjusters. As much as I don't like crawling around under a hot car, I feel it is probably 1 more potential thing to go wrong. So I will most likely just get a cable, and forego the adjuster.
