then you should have spark eith the dist in place, now you know that the dist/pick up/module are working, check the coil wire and verify that the dist is spinning when the motor is turning over, if it is turning check to be sure the rotor isnt broke, then put the cap back on and check for spark again..I would have to say, if you still have no spark, I would suspect a bad cap or wires...

ok after messing with this thing for hours and days, i finally noticed that the rotor was not spinning. i then assumed that the starter wasnt engaging so i looked down to see if the crank was spinning and it was so at this point i figured the timing chain was broke or something so i took off the waterpump and timing chain to discover there was no key in the crank. so all this time thats why it wasnt getting spark because without the key of course it wouldnt spin the cam to make the dizzy turn to make spark. now i have a new problem. im getting spark now and fuel and still no start. the car did set for two years but i replaced the plugs, rotor, cap, dizzy, plug wires, and coil. any suggestions?![]()
I'm going to guess at this point it is just nowhere in time. Bring #1 to TDC and set the distributor assuming you did set the cam with the crank after putting the key in it. If it's poping like it may want to start you may have it 180 degree out. Also verify you have the firing order set correctly since you changed the wires.
you prob fouled all the plug by soaking them with fuel while trying to start it, a soaked plug may fire out of the car but not under compression, and yes Ed is right when you put the dist back in you will need to set it back in time, you can't just put it back in any old way..

Aren't those interference motors?

I was gonna say that the dist was not turning by cause of a missing or sheared key. I just did not want to look dumb. I am sure it is way out of time. TDC it and re-do the dist timing. It should be allright.

i did put new plugs in and still nothing. i did line up the dots on the timing chain when i put it back together. there is something really weird going on though. i pulled #1 plug out and did the til your finger pops off method but it wont do this. i dont get it. then the last time i pulled the dizzy out to move it, the oil pump shaft came out with it. i cant win with this car,

Are positive the timing marks are right? Forget the dizzy for now, but crank to cam timing right? If so, I suspect you have a bigger problem. You said the crank was spinning, but the dizzy not turning. Well, the pistons where going up and down, and the valves where stationary :( I hope i'm wrong, but.......

so what should i do next? would a compression test tell me anything or should i just tear the heads off?
I have a complete longblock I'd like to get out of the garage. PM me if you're interested.
well...i took the heads off today and i got 8 bent pushrods and 8 bent valvesbut i also got to learn a little bit about the botton end. its .040 over and has forged speed pro pistons.

SO what are your plans gonna be? A nice set of TW's or re-build the stockers?
