Question for a HVAC person…

Over in my garage thread, someone suggested setting up a heat pump for the garage. A used one has become available in my area and I was wondering if it is a good deal and what it will take to install it. His asking price for both pieces of hardware is 700.00.

Nordyne/Miller indoor and outdoor 2 1/2 ton heat pump system. Unit worked perfectly when removed last week. The indoor unit has been stored indoors. This heatpump unit is a 12 SEER unit which is very good. It was replaced because an addition was added to the house and this one is no longer matched to the expanded system. It has a quality scroll compressor with a 10 year warranty. It has a 10KW emergency heat with circuit breaker. All you need is a thermostat and you have heating and cooling. I'm sure anyone knows that this system is worth a few thousand dollars brand new. The unit is located below Baltimore. I'll probably kick myself down the road when I need the unit, but I'm totally remodeling my home and it has to go. Plus the wife won't let me keep things around like I used to. All of the manuals included. The heat pump was well cared for during it's usage. Good Luck.

Honestly Miller is a pretty crappy unit. Mobile home stuff. You will need an insulated copper lineset to connect indoor and outdooor units. Two 220 circuits (one for indoor unit one for outdoor unit) a heat pump stat (2 heat, 1 cool) and some amount of ductwork. If it was a mobile home unit it will be downflow. Sometimes airhandlers can be mounted in any position, just have to flip the coil around. make sure the coil and condenser were sealed where the lines were cut off. Will also need some one with acess to a vacuum pump and refrigerant (r-22 for 12 seer stuff), and be able to braze the lineset in. Would also recommend a liquid line drier. Would find out how old it is. More than a few years I would pass. Also , don't get real exicted about the 12 seer efficiency. It's not bad, but nothing great. 13 seer is the government mandated minium for new equipment as of 2006 so 12 is fine, but nothing to write home about.
