    Broken oil pump drive

Like the title says, I broke the drive that goes from the oil pump to the distributer again. I broke it last year in the same exact race. I don't think I should be breaking these. The car is only making 350-360 RWHP running 11.40's N/A. Has anyone heard of this problem or know what might be causing these to break?

Last year it was the original pump and I figured it locked up from being old, so I put a meiling standard pump in and it broke in a couple months. The shalft is probably stock it came with it from advance auto.

Mike using a stock shaft is just pushing your luck. Just get a good hardened shaft before you waste that motor.

I had a pump go in an 88 LX with 250XXX miles. It snaped the shaft. Besides that, it shouldnt be going.

Thanks Ed, I'm definitely getting one of those shafts when I do the motor. By the way that a nice pic of the pumpkin with some air under the tires.

Is this again (3rd time?) after we talked at the track last?

Based on the number of broken timing parts I've seen just on this site, I would put hardened "everything I can find" in that part of the engine. I would want to understand the "why". If you put a hardened drive shaft in there, will it just transmit the problem to anther place in the timing drive like what we saw with some of the others with cam and crank keys???

I'm not much help beyond that, I have a timing belt, but the oil drive on my junk is hairy at best and will not tolerate a high pressure pump.

I would take the oil pump apart and see that nothing is in it to cause any sort of bind. Little piece of gasket jammed in pump gears can do wonders to a pump shaft I have seen.

I've used several brands and I have to say the ARP oil pump shaft is the nicest. It's big enough that it doesn't need the anti-pull out clip. And it's only like $1 or 2 bucks more than the FRPP unit.
