    Winter project - new motor for my wife's '66 GT

    Hi guys and gals,

    I thought it would be fun to document the work on my wife's car here on the forum, so here goes! My wife's '66 GT coupe is a San Jose car with 83,989 original miles, zero rust and lots of options. It is Emberglow with Parchment interior. It was given a cosmetic restoration in 1985 ( paint and interior, I believe ). On top of the GT package, which gave it the 289 A-code ( 4 bbl ) motor, the front disc brakes, heavier coil springs, a bigger front sway bar, GT fog lights, and trumpet exhaust through the rear valance, the car came with power steering, factory AM/8-track complete with door speakers, factory A/C, C4 automatic, console, and the convenience group ( interior lights and remote driver's mirror ). I first saw the car 15+ years ago when a friend of mine was replacing the water pump in it for his neighbor who owned the car at the time. I was really impressed in that the car still had ( and has ) all of the original California emissions equipment on it. If you haven't seen this setup before, let me tell you - there is a LOT of plumbing involved!! The car has never had a speck of rust on it or been in any type of accident, so it retains all of its original sheet metal. Anyway, when I heard it was for sale 8 or 9 years ago I couldn't pass it up, as the price was right and we were ( somehow ) able to come up with the cash to buy it.

    We drove the car sparingly for several years, never having the slightest problem other than small leaks of all the usual kinds. When I noticed that some coolant was slowly seeping from the head gasket area, the oil pan leak had worsened, the power steering leak became a steady drip, and the tranny was leaving larger red puddles on the garage floor, I figured it was time to dig into the car and give it the attention it deserves.

    Because I want to take my time and do a show quality job on the engine and engine bay, I decided to look for a low mileage motor to drop in while I rebuilt the original motor. So I found a 1994 5.0 out of a Mustang GT with 62,000 miles on it for what I thought was a great price ( $350 ) and got started.

    So far I have pulled the motor from the GT, as well as the exhaust and transmission. Next, I completely cleaned the undercarriage ( which is actually a lot of FUN when the car is totally rust-free and doesn't have undercoating on it!!). I'm in the middle of cleaning up the engine compartment right now, while also tearing down the stock 289 and the 5.0 motors to prep for the swap. The 289 intake, timing cover, water pump, and oil pan are all bead blasted and ready for primer / paint, as they'll be swapped over to the 5.0 so it will look like the old 289. The 5.0 motor is all cleaned up and sprayed with a few coats of primer. I'll be swapping the oil pickup from the 289 to the 5.0, and I already have a Professional Products 50oz balancer that will keep things rotating smoothly along with the 50oz flexplate that I still have to buy. Before the 5.0 goes in, I'll check the rod and main bearings and install a new double roller timing chain that will accomodate the 289's fuel pump eccentric. I also have to buy a distributor gear that will allow me to run the original distributor with the roller cam in the 5.0. I'm sure I'm missing a few details, but that's the bulk of it.

    So that's pretty much where I am with the project right now. There's a ton of work to do, but hopefully everything will be done by spring in time for cruising season. My own '66 coupe isn't quite as "family friendly," so I need to get the GT back together so our family can make our weekly ride to Bruusters in style!!

    Here are a few photos of the project in progress... I'll try to post updates as I find time to sneak out into the garage to get some work done.

    Last is a photo of my two girls, who are looking forward to our maiden voyage sometime in the spring of 2008.

    Thanks fork. The 5.0 motor will be temporary ( 1 to 3 years ), as I will be rebuilding the original 289 as time and money allow. It will be a full-blown rebuild ( machining the block, new pistons, reconditioning the rods, hardened valve seats in the heads, new valves,springs, yada yada yada ), so it will take some time. That's why I picked up this 5.0 motor - so I could have the car back on the road relatively quickly without spending a lot of cash. I figure once the 289 is finished and ready to go back in, I can sell the 5.0 for at least what I have in it.

    Thanks Crazy & Wick - I am having a good time with it. I just need to find MORE time!!

    Thanks Coral and SV1000. Coral - I'd love to see your rides sometime. I'm a big Galaxie fan dating back to the days of my Dad's '68 LTD 2 door with a 390. Where exactly are you? I live in Moon and work at Bayer ( near Settlers' Cabin Park ). I'm actually working on some final reassembly on my Dad's '57 TBird here at the house as well. Lots of trim to install, plus a complete interior re-do in the works. That project also has to be done by spring, as Dad is looking forward to some quality time with it ( and Mom ) at local cruise nights... I'll have to post a few photos of the Bird on another thread...

    Lou - thanks for the compliment. I wish the car was clean when you were here to see it. It's quite a dusty mess, even in these photos. Right now, it's actually cleaner underneath than topside. All I've had to use is some Simple Green and some heavy duty paper towels to wipe off the oil and grease. I actually crawl under it and giggle at how clean it is. I almost feel like I stole the car when I bought it way back when, considering what they're going for these days.

    got a little work done...

    Picked up a sweet set of exhaust manifolds from 01Cobra today for a smokin deal - $30 for the pair. Thanks 01Cobra!!!

    Also got some stuff primed and painted this weekend...crank pulley, water pump pulley, oil pan, muffler hangers, and the intake manifold ( primed only ). Should have the intake and timing cover / water pump painted and 2nd coats on the rest of the stuff by mid-week. Then it's time to check the main and rod bearings.

    This week I'm taking the exhaust manifolds and valve covers ( finned aluminum from an '85 GT ) down to Prism powdercoating in Hopewell. The manifolds will get a ceramic metallic cast iron finish, and the valve covers will get the Ceramachrome finish. After all...I need a little bling bling under the hood!!! :D

    Here are some photos of freshly painted goodies...

    Stopped by Prism Powdercoating in Hopewell today and met Glen, the owner. Nice guy. I have a little bit of prep work to do on my valve covers ( aluminum '85 GT ), as they have some bad casting in certain areas, before I drop them off along with my new exhaust manifolds next week. His prices seem really reasonable, and he seems extremely meticulous. Once they're done I'll post some photos.

    update - '66 GT motor swap

    ok - it has been a LONG time since my last update, but hey - some progress is better than NO progress, so I figured I should post some pics.

    The "new" motor ( 62k mile '94 5.0 HO ) is ready to install once I bolt up the flexplate & C4. The powdercoated exhaust manifolds really came out nice as did the cermakrome valve covers ( from an '85 GT - I needed a little BLING on top!! ). I had a problem with an intake manifold bolt that had broken off flush with the top of the head, so I removed the head and was able to drill out the bolt. I bolted on a new oil pump, pickup, and oil pump drive shaft. I installed the original intake, timing cover, and oil pan, along with a new 50oz balancer. A buddy picked up a nice used Holley 650 that will get cleaned up and bolted on. The only parts I need now are a distributor gear compatible with the roller cam for the stock distributor, some plug wires, and a few other little things.

    Here are some pics. Hopefully I'll have more after the long July 4th weekend...

    Thanks Tim. I hope to bring the '66 down your way for tailpipes and an install of the Borlas I bought from Bob Z ( 94Cobra ) sometime soon. The car looks even cleaner in person. :D You won't have to wash your hands when you're done working on it unless your tools are dirty.

    Don't worry - I'm not a big vette fan - but I picked up those BFG posters cheap ( like $7 each ) and had them mounted on gatorboard with a clear film on top to keep them nice in the garage. I have more pictures hanging in my garage than inside the house...:o If I find a cool replacement poster the vette will probably come down.

    I got the chance to check it out in person and the pics dont do a thing for it. It is clean beyond belief.(and the garage is awesome, just gotta make room for the sc!)

    I know...I know...

    The SC did spend most of the winter indoors, while my wife's Explorer sat out in the cold. But hey - she has remote start and I don't!!! :D
