BTW, a painter's trick to covering any wires / lines that you don't want to get paint on is to wrap aluminum foil around them. You just crimp in around the wire and it seals up real nice and is a breeze to get off after you paint.

the tip has 1.7 engraved on it... and on the side of the gun it says hvlp and max 21psi??? is that where the regulator should be set?? beats me

A 1.7 should be OK for single stage, but I wouldn't recomend using it to spray just clear. The 21 psi may refer to tip pressure. I'd recomend searching the net to see if you can find the manufacture so that you can reference their website for recomended pressure settings for the single stage paint.
Here is the gun that I use:

How did I know you were gonna come in with a DeVilbiss? HAHA Those are some awesome guns. Very pricey though. But the quality is second to none.
I got it shipped to me for $240 or $250. Can't remember exactly, but I do know I opted for the 2 day shipping cause I needed it in a hurry. Got it from spraygundepot.com. They actually had it listed on ebay, which was slightly cheaper than their website price. It was a whole kit with 4 tips (2.2, 1.8, 1.5 & 1.3) a regulator, gun hook and hard carrying case.
I just got a gun myself, I am planning on painting my T-Bird. My gun is an HVLP and it came with two tips, a 1.8, and a 2.0, would those be good enough, or should I get a smaller one???
just spent 8 hours straight finishing the prep..... sprayed the sealer, and 3 light coats and a light mist finish coat.......looks pretty good, no runs that i can see and looks pretty uniform... looks a little dry, either way im sure he'll be happy w/ the results of a $500 paintjob.... thanks for all the tips ed, it helped alot. i ended up spraying at aroudn 30#'s at the regulator... i have some more pics but too much paint in the air and they look like i have a $2 camera

Congratz!!! Now you have more of an appreciation as to why a paint job cost so much!
looks good. you def picked a hard color to spray in single stage. you will get better and faster more you do bodywork.
just sounds a little dry but as long as you have enough paint on the car it can be wetsanded and buffed to look like a million bucks. but then again it is you first paint job. The texture is from a few things spraying the paint too fast, too much air pressure, or not enough material. But all in all congrats for taking on the job. That is how you learn to to do paint and bodywork by just doing it.
