I know a belt re-routing on the older 5-Liters negates the need for a idler. Not sure about the SN-95's belt configuration.

you could run without it, but with the pulley you can use the same belt
I ditched mine and run a shorter belt. the belt goes from the crank, over the tensioner, and to the alternator, the rest is the same as the stock configuration. I've run mine like this for years.

Yes, understood. The problem is that I am about to install a set of GT40P heads and they don't have the proper openings for the thermactor so the smog pump is not really useful. I guess that I have to either ditch the heads and opt for different ones, get them machined for the thermactors (too expensive, likely) or rip out the smog pump. Anyone have any ideas? Do aftermarket aluminum heads have provisions for the smog pump or no?
