I know a belt re-routing on the older 5-Liters negates the need for a idler. Not sure about the SN-95's belt configuration.

you could run without it, but with the pulley you can use the same belt

I ditched mine and run a shorter belt. the belt goes from the crank, over the tensioner, and to the alternator, the rest is the same as the stock configuration. I've run mine like this for years.

Yes, understood. The problem is that I am about to install a set of GT40P heads and they don't have the proper openings for the thermactor so the smog pump is not really useful. I guess that I have to either ditch the heads and opt for different ones, get them machined for the thermactors (too expensive, likely) or rip out the smog pump. Anyone have any ideas? Do aftermarket aluminum heads have provisions for the smog pump or no?

Thanks, yes it helps. The more I read here and elsewhere, I think that I am going to just keep the smog stuff in place and drill or weld studs and attach the piping to the new heads. The smog system won't be exactly right without the thermactors but should work with the engine hot and keep me out of emissions grief. I think that I will just tear the engine apart and see what I need to do and go from there. Thanks guys for the thoughtful advice and sorry to those of you rooting through parts to find me a delete pulley.

Hey, I got your message. I actually tried an experiment with the one I had. When it did not work, I threw it in the scrap pile.
