    8.8 T'Lok Carrier Removal

Trying to get the rear the rest of the way appart on the Capri. Got everything out finally. Started with a broke cross pin retaining bolt, got that. Then the broken part of the axle had the C clip snagged in there, finally got that out. So now i have the caps off, everything (spiders, clutches, etc) out of the carrier.

I can not get the freaking carrier out of there. Anyone have any tips, tricks, special tool, whatever that would help I would appreciate knowing about it. I just cant seem to get it to budge, have tried bars, tapping on the bearing races, bigger bars, etc. It still spins free, no issues there, it just wont come out :(

    I'm thinking explosives next........

Usually a long prybar works to get them out. Its one of those things you have to jump back and fourth to keep it from binding.

Thanks Lou, I figured, just was hoping there was a secrete handshake ;)

Stange failure on the axle. This was an OEM SVO axle as best I know. Splines where about what I expected.....

What is strange is what the end of the broken piece looked like. Looks like is was made with lots of that high quality made in china steel or something, kinda odd. The outer surface is solid, but the core is just full of crap. Amazing it held up at all ;)

    Wow Bob,

    turbo-4, the destroyer of parts.

What are you replacing it with, the axles & carrier?

Just dropping a 31 spline traction lok in it a good axles. Changing from the SVO length axle to a normal fox length too. Its only a 4 cylinder ;)

The carrier is kinda pressed in there Bob. You can wedge a prybar in and turn the pinion, it will roll right out. With the preload on the outter bearings, its a bit difficult. Just keep a hand ready, it drops out. HAHAHA

That looks like a heat treating process that was not effective. Honestly that looks cast, and i did'nt think factory axles were manufatured like that so i'm not really sure. The main reason why gun-drilled axles are stronger than solids is becuase the heat can fully penetrate the steel in a heat treating process. Mild steel won't hold much rotational force if not heat treated
