I pretty much made up my mind I'm going to stick with the current configuration for a few reasons. First off, it's going to take an immense amount of testing to get it to where it needs to be on the power level aspect. It's not uncommon to test 2-3 different cylinder heads, perhaps more. Then the camshaft needs to be addressed. About the only things I can keep from my current deal would be the water pump, headers, and maybe the intake. Now, if the carb would get the call that would be put back on the shelf.
Then the financial backing is not adequate to support a MAX. effort in this class. Travel expenses, gate fees, hotel/motel costs, and broken/extra parts funds need to be considered. Those G-Forces don't last too long and a spare is mandatory if you wanna go somewhere.
The current combo is in good shape from a mechanical standpoint. There are some little tweaks than can be made. The search for some killer D/A continues. It would actually be cheaper to just spring for an adjustable clutch and a 5R trans than to compete in P/S. It is not a cost effective addition by any means when comparing e.t. loss vs. $$$, BUT with a driveline of that stature, any more H.P. gained from a cubic inch increase would be a welcome one.
It's going to be difficult to find any additional power as the combo sits right now, however, I'd like to get the AEM into it in the future. Seeing the improvements it made on your example is motivating.
All in all, I'd love to do the P/S deal, but, it's either all in or all out for me. Maybe down the road I'll get a chance to compete. Right now I'll just snoop around and keep my eyes and ears open.![]()
