Thread: Wheel Back Spacing

    Wheel Back Spacing

    Take a look at the pics these are 5.5 inches of back spacing clearly going to be too tight when the slicks go on. I am think of changing to 4.5 inches of back spacing. Should move the slick out from the quad shock enough. Clearance with the top of the fender is ok. Running 26X8.5 slicks.

    Just wanted someone to back up my thinking. Thoughts?

    Loose the quads and the Summit wheels ;) Seriously, good control arms will let you loose the quads, and if you are going to run on slicks, you likely are going to want good arms anyway.

    Why do you say that about the summit wheels? Have you had issues with them?

    I picked up a set that I was going to use as skinny fronts. My car is 5 lug, so 4 lug and GM patterns are going to be different, but there where a number of little details that led me to return them and just get real Weld's.

    The "holes" where the lugs go in are real deep making putting a lug nut on a blind fishing expedition. For something I was going to swap around for the track, it seemed like a PITA.

    The hole for the lug nuts are too small for a real socket. I had to use a 3/8" spark plug socket to even get something in there.

    With the 5 lug wheels. the center bore darn near came out to those lug holes. All it would take is a slight ding from the venter bore into the lug hole, and even a thin wall socket wont get in there. One of the wheels I had, was dinged just a little right out of the box, it was that thin in there.

    They arent very light.

    I figured they just werent worth in hassel what few $$'a I would save with them, and took them back and sprung for real Welds.

    I though you might ask how I knew what wheels they where ;)

    I already noticed that the holes are way too small for a normal socket or lug wrench. What the hell were they think when they made them?

    I figured you knew they were summit wheels by the part number listed on the wheels.

    I think you have the right idea I might just spring for the welds too.

    5.5 backspacing is the perfect fit on a 15x8 wheel on a fox body but you dill need to remove the quad shock. The 4.5 backspacing wheel will push the tire out too far in the wheel opening. With only a 26x8.5 slick you may be able to just reverse the quad shock and make it fit.

    Ok say I remove the quads and run stock control arms that would cause alot of wheel hop right?

    I'm sure it went something like.....how cheap can the Chinese make them ,and how much can we sell them for. Besdies the small bore for the lug nuts, all the other issues would be better on a GM 5 x 5.75 pattern.

    Yep it says made in china right on the box.


    I've heard both sides on this. Some toss them and never have an issue, other say it terrible wheel hop. I think a lot depends on the condition of you bushings and such. I always ditch the quads and just run good arms.

    Well for now I think I am going to keep them and try taking the quads off and see how it runs. The wife is pissed enough about 600 bucks on wheels and slicks !

    I just bought some 15x8" summit stars with a 5.5" BS last fall. I have only used them twice but they work great with a tuner lug nuts and tool. They are 100 dollars less each than the welds and the lugs nuts are cheaper. My lugs look almost like this but mine have a torx end on it instead of a hex end. Got 20 and the tool for 15-20 bucks at advance auto close to prp.
