    Which oil do you prefer?

Interesting thing happened today at the gas pumps in Chambersburg pa. I was filling up my f-150($52 worth) and an Amsoil representative confronted me while he was pumping gas into his grand prix. He asked which oil i used in my truck and what weight. I use Royal purple 10w-30. He also handed me a gas additive called King Super NT gas additive 890. I was wondering what everyone thought on the 2 oils...Amsoil and Royal Purple and what does everyone else use? Also has anyone heard of the King Super NT gas additive 890? The manufacturer is in Hagerstown, Md. Which is only 50 miles from my house. Its suppose to clean the deposits like any other gas treatment but the guys said this was way better stuff.( i know they all say that but my trucks got 107,000miles on it) and it was free so i figured what the heck. In a 100miles your suppose to "feel" the difference so ill know on my way home from work whether or not it works.

I use Mobil1, I might use Amsoil if there was a local dealer and it was available in 5w20.

Wait, i'm not trying to be rude at all, but you run Royal Purple through your F-150??

Over all the forums i have seen billions of oil threads... I've come across a bunch of studies on the best oils out there, and Royal Purple, Amsoil, and Shell Rotella Synthetic are always the best ones... only difference is, Shell Rotella Syn is less than half the price of the others.... only problem is its only available in 15w-40, which numerically makes it thicker than Ford recomments for anything...

I run the Shell Rotella Synthetic and absolutely love it... and i'm pretty sure my oil sees as much heat and torture as any other car.... However, it is thicker than recommended, so i don't run it in my Harley truck and just try to stick with the 5w20...

Yea i run the 10w-30 in my truck but im goin to switch to the 5w-30. I dont see the problem in running it either. Havent had any problems and ive run synthetic for 20,000+. I asked around on the forums and with the local ford dealer and they said i shouldnt have any problems. Just keep it changed every 6,000 or so depending on driving style. If you think there's a problem running it what do you suggest im always open for suggestions.
What do you suggest for my 2000 v6 mustang? i want to switch it over to royal purple also or amsoil?

shit i dunno... i wasn't saying anything about the grade... i just can't believe you run oil that's $7+ a quart in your F-150 .... LOL... but w/e suits ur fancy man!

I'm sure no matter what way you go, that will be fine ... those are both top of the line oils

In my LT1 T/A, i always ran Shell Rotella T (which is the dino oil Shell Rotella) along with a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and it was still kicking VERY strong with 178K miles

ooo my bad..sorry man..i thought u were questioning using that weight of oil in the f-150. Nah....its not that im rich or ne thing that i can buy the expensive oil...i just need the truck to last and im trying to squeeze out the extra hp and mpg. Ive been running the truck 6-7000 btwn oil changes since i switched over after the intial 3000 change with synthetic. Ive heard nothing but good things about royal purple i was just wondering if there were any pros and cons to royal purple to amsoil.

and ill definitely check out the oil website. Thanks man

because that's what IRL and Champ Series runs.

If those muthers can rev to 18,000 RPM with this junk, I sure as hell can feel safe revving to 6,000.

The Jeep has Valvoline 5w30 synthetic blend in it (it was on sale). Otherwise I use Pennzoil 5w30 in everything...usually with Prolong as an additive. I am a firm believer in Pennzoil and Prolong. Had a 96 dodge intrepid with 159k miles and the cylinders looked brand spank'in new.

I used Castrol GTX in my SHO for about 2 years until I tore the engine down and saw that it had tarred and tarnished everything. I switched to Pennzoil and no complaints!

I should just run synthetic in everything rather than add the Prolong, as the overal cost(s) are on par. :o

Tech guy that I was talk to on phone when I voted recommended Amsoil. Said he would never recommend Royal Purple. Since he works/races cars all the time I would go with what he said. Changes oil more often than me since I have someone do it. lol.

Call me a skeptic but, why would a buy motor oil from someone/company that markets like Amway? Amsoil may be good stuff but, their marketing bothers me.

What mileage are you do oil changes at? What kind of commute do you have long or short?

I think there is good evidence out there showing the most of the benefits of synthetic can be gained by self blending 2 of the 5 quarts of oil during an oil change. It's not that full synthetic oil is bad, it's bang for the buck on a street car using a synthetic/mineral oil blend. If you were running a turbo & needed the enhanced properties of synthetic it would be a different story. There was a consumer reports oil study a few years ago where they did various mileage oil changes on a NYC taxi fleet. They were able to show no significant wear difference between 3000, 5000 & 7500 mile oil changes. It never hurts to go by the manual recommended oil change mileage.

The 3000 mile changes in the 60 & 70's cars was probably needed to looser engine tolerances and the use of carburetors. Our newer cars & trucks with EFI & tighter engine tolerances & better materials burn much cleaner. Therefore 3000 mile oil changes can and should be a thing of the past. I do long enough drives that my car & oil get fully warmed up therefore I can run up to 7500 miles on oil changes on my daily driver per the manual.

My commute to work everyday is 80miles round trip through basically back roads. Up mountains, windy roads and interstate when i go visit the gf after work. Last oil change on the truck i ran 8,000miles. Yea the oil was dark but nothing to bad. I figured id run 7000 miles on this oil change and see what it looks like. I use to always run castrol gtx until i heard nothing but bad things about it. Im just trying to get the best protection/bang for the buck and squeeze out a few extra hp/mpg. I like the royal purple stuff and i wont switch to amsoil but just was curious what everyone else thought. $7 a quart is a good deal of money to pay out for an oil change but i just drove past the ford dealer the other day and they wanted sumthing like 29.95 for a 5quart oil change and lube. Thats ridiculous. SO i figured if i spent 45 and did it myself and used the oil of my choice it was well worth the 15 extra dollars. I dont smoke so splurge sumwhere else...y not on my FORD!

    x2 on that website!

I did a lot of reading on there a while ago, and the jist I got was when it comes to oil, dino is dino is dino and synthetic is synthetic is synthetic provided all oils in question are certified to the same grade standard.

    Thanks!

I figure I change it often, and dino causes less blow bye, not that I experence alot. I started doing the dino after a reccomendation from Tim the owner of www.modularpowerhouse.com. Plus the filter choice is as important as the oil choice.
