hahahaha..you know what i meant by getting the most out of the oil...to thick makes the engine work harder!...too thin doesnt protect like it should.

I use rotella T, in everything!!! I have NEVER seen it have any problem ever, it is called the "million mile oil" I use there synthetic also, this is the only syn i ever use, I try and look at it this way, I have seen major problems with guys using syn, mostly form people changing over to syn and not prepping the engine first.. On a personal note, i have a buddy that bought a new toyota van in 03, and i changed the oil for him every 3k like clockwork, he insisted on syn oil, so thats what i put in and one day it just started tapping and then pow, it went, when i took it out and pulled the pan and valve cover it was totally burned and ashed up..

I use Royal Purple 5w20 in engine(during race season), Synchromax in tranny and Lucas oil in rear. I have no real preference and will use whatever I feel will work best.

I know Pennzoil/Quaker State/WolfsHead/ProLine oils are bottled on same line over in Newell, WV.

We use Rotella T at work for all our diesels.

The company i use to work for Michels pipeline out of brownsville wisconsin used rotella oil in all their fleet vehicles. They were number 5 in the fortune five hundred but kept hearing it was too thick and made the engine work to hard is what the ford mechanic said. Take it for what its worth. Ive switch both the stang and the f-150 over to royal purple and i couldnt b happier. But thanks everyone for your input.

I'm running Amsoil 5W30 with AMsoil filter in my superduty. i change it every 3000 miles. My work is only a 1 mile drive from my house, so the truck really doesn't warm up, and It takes me at least 6 months to put 3000 miles on it. The Motorcraft 5W20 completely sucked for me. It was really black and thin come 3000 miles.

I used castrol GTX 10W30 in the stang, but a bunch leaked out ( i did fix the leak) so I used some 15W40 Mobil delo diesle oil to refill (2qts worth) no problems yet.

Let me add this note, yes rotella is to thick for mod motors, the yhave tighter clearences, the lightest weight availible is 15-40, so its perfect for pushrod engines but just about all mod motors say 5or10-30 on the cap, check out these pics from last week, this is my buddies 4.0 explorer, this thing get babyed, he changes the oil like clockwork, but guess what he use..... oh my... synthetic, i try to tell people but i have seen this more than a few times, and it has me scared to go near the stuff, now i have to tear it down and clean it all out and add a new crank kit and bearings and oil pump...

    Tim,

I don't think you can draw any conclusions from one or two engines like this.

Synthetics are proven to work by well researched car manufacturers, Porsche, Ferrari, & the new Corvettes to name a few. I don't think they are always the best choice used straight in older vehicles. It's been proven that a 1 or 2 quarts combined with regular oil give the majority of the benefits of straight synthetic use. The blended oils often only use 15% synthetic. As you stated, newer motors like the mod & LSX motors run tighter clearances and this is where the synthetics work very well.

I know where you are coming from, but my problem is that I have seen people use both and have seen more problems from synthetic, thats all i am saying, I was on the phone with comp cams a few months ago and we were talking about engine and cam break in periods, they fully recommended to use Diesel oil for cam break in, and i was like, "diesel oil" and they insisted for me to use diesel oil for cam break in.. And i have had great luck with rotella considering i have built alot of motors and Never had one come apart, (other than my own, due to my own stupidity), I pulled my small block car down a couple years ago because i melted the top corner of a piston slightly and had to replace it, well I bought new bearings and pump to put in while it was apart, and the bearings in the motor looked like the day i put them in!!! I tell you what i just believe in that oil... Nothing will change my mind, it has proven itself time and time again..

The Rotella they sell now isnt nearly as good as the old stuff. The reason for Rotella being considered a good oil was for its zinc additive. Rotella no longer produces their oil with the zinc additive, so its just regular plain oil now.
There was a good thread over on Hardcore5.0 about this and all of the big dogs chimmed in and confirmed this.
