Maybe if the auto makers didnt crank out a bajillion SUVs and pickups and tried to offset with rinky dink shoebox cars then they could actually make some nice performance cars and other interesting vehicles.

the problem is, automakers will make what SELLS. For the current political and social climate and despite that performance cars are making a comeback, this still means vehicles that mimic a Prius, a minivan, or an Escalade.
The SUV trend is on its way out though as the "crossover" fad begins. This will provide more latitude to put performance cars in an auto maker's lineup since crossovers tend to be more fuel efficient than Escalades.
All in all, I'm satisfied with the 2020 target. Like the guy said at the height of the vegetarian craze people were still buying steaks. The same thing is going to happen here. We all need to accept that the conventional oil supply as we know it is finite. By making future cars more efficient and using alternative fuels, it leave more conventional gasoline for us to enjoy our performance cars.
it also serves as notice for us to buy and hold onto both the sports cars of yesteryear as well as today. Dont say we weren't warned!
hopefully we wont have to worry about this as technology gets better. the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's were getting 10-15 MPG sometimes at best and then there are the present-day mustang GT's and corvette z06's with their huge 427ci engine that are getting around 23 MPG
hopefully technology will allow V8's to be used by 2020, even tho i fear it might not happen becuase 35MPG is rediculous

I heard about this about a month ago and I was speachless. If this is true one of the big three auto makers will be folding there tents and going under.
This is perposterous. Don't ya just love our government.

every time these laws come down we all get all up in arms. performance will probably drop off for a few years then spring back...look at the late 70's then the early 80's.
They can make em, but do I have to buy em? Nope. My V8 powered vehicles are goigng nowhere. I will walk before I buy a boring econobox.

It seems like the non car lovers need to get educated before they start pointing fingers at the high HP cars. Some the cars that they mention get the best fule to HP ratio in the world and besides that people dont drive them every day. Ok lets break this down...I have a 03 Cobra that puts out a bit of power and got 28 mpg on a highway trip. I also have a 89 f150 4x4 that if it get 15mpg I do a happy dance at the pump and everyone looks at me like I am off my rocker. So why do people instantly jump on the band wagon that if a car can go 200mph then it must suck gas? Then they go shopping in a SUV that get 15mpg and tops out at 90mph down hill with just one person in it. I am confused! I also like the mention of the diesel cars being built that get 44mpg. Hello! Have you seen diesel prices!
Ok rant off. Thanks for leting me vent!!
