"Police said the white sedan was not involved in the street race but accidentally drove into the crowd of about 50 people that had spilled onto the highway to watch two racing cars speed off."

Not to be rude but maybe this should be under the Darwin Awards instead of street racing.

the white sedan sure looks cop like - if so why was a cop car speeding through a crowd of bystanders?

I know they cut off doors to get people trapped inside out, but both doors seem functional, especially the rear in the last photo. Does look like an unmarked cop car possibly chasing after the racers.

This is incomprehensible to me. I can't believe not one person looked behind them and/or saw or heard the car coming??? And, the driver? He/she must've been stone cold wasted. You have to have your eyes open when you drive right? It's a two-lane highway, but there still might be deer or debris or a downed powerline on the roadway. WTF??? you don't see 50 people and plow right into them??? there's something fishy here IMO!!!

I like how the cops "know" its a street racing road. well if they know about it...isnt that their job to stop it...isnt that what maryland tax dollars go for!!!!!!!!!
In the end tho it isnt the police's fault. its the street racers!! take it to the track! its safer for the fans and the racers!!!

some thing isnt right here she clearly states the lights werent on and they arent giving driver info and from what i heard and read in another article there were police on seen in less than 3 minutes after the crash. im willing to bet it was a cop trying to sneak up on them and didnt know they were gonna be in the road.

About 50 people were watching the race, Gaines said, and she saw the Crown Victoria approach without its lights on. She grabbed her daughter, pulling the girl to safety. But her father, William Gaines Sr., 61, had a broken leg, and was not able to get away in time. Afterward, she found his body on the road.

"He wasn't breathing; he wasn't moving," Gaines said. "His body was in pieces."

Her brother, William Gaines Jr., was also there. The car came through so fast that "it just ripped people apart," he said.

"I didn't even see the car. All I heard was stuff breaking," he said.

    +1

No question in my mind that it was the cops trying to sneak up on them.

This is the main reason that I feel that it was a cop driving the white car.
"Police interviewed the Crown Victoria driver, but no charges were pending, Copeland said. Authorities were looking for the drivers of the two cars involved in the race."

They have the drive of the car that ran over the crowd and "no charges were pending" but they are looking for the drivers involved in the race. That is BS if you ask me.

I don't know how reliable this is since its from another site but...

to clear this up: my boy died from the fact of the police chasing the crown victoria, the kid ran thru the crowd at about 75 mph, turning over his car, the race had already taking place and the cars had gone thru, it was just like at any other race, when at the starting line people gather and once the cars leave the line, people gather to the center to see the cars making the pass, well from behind here comes the crown vic with no head lights and thru the crowd..... NOW THE ****ING COPS DONT WANNA TELL THE TRUTH BECAUSE OF THE " NO CHASE LAW." RIP "OTTIS & SPORT"

If they were not racing then the cops would'nt have been chasing, as for the no chase law that to me is BS, let the cops do there job as everyone is always quick to blame the police for trying to do there job. If you street race, which I did a few times, you know the consiquences if you get caught or if someone gets injured or killed you will pay the price, just like anything else you are responsible for your own actions, period. People need to quit blaming others for something they caused.

x2 you cant line up a street race with whatever many of people watching in the middle of a highway and expect nothing to happen. im young and have gone fast jumpin on my friends cars real quick to prove a point but to set up a street race on a public road way and have that many people there is rediculous. real life isnt the fast and the furious. if theres that much beef between the two drivers let them take it to a legit track and settle it. as for the cop, he/she was just doing their job and should be at no fault. it just blows my mind everytime i see a story like this.

i feel the cop should be no fault if and only if the white crown vic with no lights wasnt the cop. if it was the cop nail ther ass to the wall.

What? for doing their job. The accident was caused because someone was doing something they were'nt supposed to be doing, nail them to the wall.

cops make bad choices too. the no chase law is for public safety for idiots that think they can handle high rates of speed. like adam's cop friend told him, you can't out race cell phones and radios. just because you don't get chased by a cop car doesn't mean they aren't still tracking you. but I still think its the racers stupid fault. no one would have been there, cops and crowd alike.

cops ego + bad driving = dead people, we've had cops run right through crowds to "get the bad guys" on dead end access roads when all they had to do was set up a road block and bust us as we left , but no they endangered us instead so they could feel bad ass- well I hope they feel real bad ass now. people say they dont street race/road race BS we all do, and you know it from a stop light to a 140 blast down a empty 4 lane. The police cant catch crack dealers and such bad people so I guess they have to do something

This quote makes it sound like the cops were chasing the driver of the crown vic, who went through the crown without lights.
    Terrible story either way.
Who races on a freezing Feb. night anyway?

if the cop is driving at night with no lights on at all, trying to be sneaky...then they at fault.
