    Pens last minute trades

I'm sure everyone has heard by now but......

Picked up Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen and a first round draft pick.

Also got Hal Gill from Toronto for a second and a fifth round draft pick.

    Whats everyones thoughts?

I dont necessarily like it unless they win the cup this year. Its highly unlikely they will resign Hossa after the season. If that happens they basically pissed away 4 great young players if you include the 1st round pick.

As for Gill hes big but cant skate for shit. We already have the heavyweight champion and didnt necessarily need another.

In all it looks good on paper and would make Shero look like a genius if we win the cup this year but if not it will prob end up a bad move.

Like it....good moves to make a run in the playoffs.
Amazing scoring wing and a big D, exactly what I thought they needed.
I liked the guys they lost, but they are replaceable.
Crosby and Hossa should be deadly together.

Some of my thoughts. I liked Armstrong. Almost got his jersey, good thing I didn't.

Thought these were some good thoughts.....

"Can we please stop for a second and quit over-reacting about what we gave up in this trade. It stinks that we gave up our first-round pick next year and Angelo Esposito (it remains to be seen what he can do), but we did gain the first line winger that Crosby deserves. He gave the Penguins a hometown discount when he signed his extension in the offseason, the least Ray Shero could do is give him a natural goal-scoring winger. Colby and Christensen's worth is being definitely overstated. Hal Gill (less than mobile defensive defenseman) has 20 points this year. Christensen 20 and Colby 24. Enough said...

You have to give up something to get something. I know they were well-liked in the locker room, But I think the Penguins will get along with Lord Stanley much better. Quit crying like we traded away Ron Francis and Kevin Stevens circa 1992. If you think about it we did not give up all that much. And I know Hossa has not performed as well in the playoffs, but if memory serves me he did not have Sidney Crosby centering his line."

i think the trade was stupid. we could try and resign hossa over the summer but then your also going to have to look at what to do with malkin, hes gonna be looking for a large contract as well. the pens shouldnt have given up armstrong just cause of his presence. throughout many interviews with the pens players he was looked at as one of the strongest in the locker room, not to mention the energy and grit he brought to the ice. i would have said, keep colby and leave dupuis and it would still be a fairly nice trade. another thing that gets me is hossa being a free agent this summer, why not just go after him then. were a very young team with a bright future, no need to make a crazy move to try and win the cup this year.

it could end up great but it could also be a disappointment. the team has to gel together before the playoffs with the new people.

Some good points in there. I do wish they could have kept Colby. He was one of my favorites. But they couldn't wait on Hossa because there were a few teams in the east after him that he would have gone to. Makes it easier to sign him if we go deep in the playoffs.

A lot of "IFS" in the trade. Hopefully the benefits will out weigh the negatives.

yeah, i hope for the best too. i just think shero tries to show his balls are bigger than everyone elses sometime for no reason.

What? Thats why you make this move. Its a young team with a bright PRESENT that can compete for the cup NOW. You make moves to fill voids to make a playoff run NOW. They filled two big holes---scorer for Crosby, big D.
I liked Colby and Christensen but they are very easily replaceable role wise. Hossa and Dupuis are a much better upgrade.

If they do it would likely be difficult to sign Malkin and Staal. I would not part with either.

Very true. I would imagine Shero would keep both Malkin and Staal over Hossa and Dupuis if it came down to it. But if they do take the cup then who knows......

Like i said this trade is all based on if they win the cup THIS year. Barry Melrose on sportscenter said it was the biggest trade this year and it clearly made the Penguins the front runner in the east. He said it was a bold move and a move to win the cup NOW. The mullet has spoken so i guess it could be a good trade.

im still confused about how this is gonna work out. hossa's only 35th in points this year which is still 7 behind crosby and he played 15 more games and hes a -14. i hope this deal works out for the best and we can challenge for the cup, but right now it doesnt seem like that great of a deal to me.
