I didn't realize he was 63...I was thinking more like late 50s.
I was also not the biggest fan, but nonetheless he built some great cars in his day, and his shop still turns out great cars... I appreciated his talent, just not his attitude.
Can't believe it, he looked pretty healthy during the show. He was a prick on there but im sure after dealing with employees and customers all those years it kinda burnt him out and took the fun out of the passion he had for cars.

What a shame, he was an inspiration to me and many others.
Hate to add to the negative stories, but is the only one I got. The place we get our oil changed at work is West Side Lube in Connellsville. Behind the lube joint is a little junky garage. The lube joint owner and another flunky-looking dude (I never got his name) build some decent cars in that garage. The last time I was there he had a '39 Ford that he was putting an LS1 in.
A few years ago, they built a early 50's Chevy pick-up truck with (I think) a GM 454 crate motor. It was frame-off completely restored interior/exterior wood inlays in the bed... maxed out. Either way, I thought it was gorgeous. He told me that he called Boyd Coddington and asked him if he would make a custom set of wheels for the truck. Boyd asked him to send a few pictures of the truck. He waited a few weeks and he thought Boyd was coming up with ideas. He calls him and asks what's up. Boyd told him he wasn't making any wheels for that truck because it wasn't special or different enough for his signature wheels.
Needless to say, this guy had nothing nice to say about him. :o

Never really minded the guy. I only watched the show for ideas and stuff. I wonder what will happen now with the shop. I think some of the employees feel screwed either way. Dwayne doesnt seem to know what hes talking about sometimes. Jo just doesnt seem like she would hire people or keep people based on skill. I was pretty pissed when they got rid of that girl last season. Im not just saying that because she was cute. She seemed to have some skill and know how, and like she said she was willing to work there for whatever amount of money. But Jo didnt like her and now shes gone.
Either way Boyd was quite the innovator form what I saw in his earlier years.
Diabetes can really tear you up. Boyd had it, and I'm willing to bet the complications from his surgery were directly related to the diabetes. All kinds of stuff goes wrong when a diabetic body is asked to heal. He didn't appear to be the nicest of guys, but he was good at what he did. At least he got to work in a field he was passionate for - that's not too common these days...
