    hyper pistons

as i said before im putting an s trim on my car. my bottom end consists of stock crank and rods and .30 over keith black hyper pistons. i was thinkin bout selling my shortblock to my little brother to compensate some money for a forged bottom end. the problem is, im working 6-7 days a week now and dont really have much time to do 2 motor swaps. so this comes to my question. do you think my bottom end will hold up to around 10 psi for a while or should i just stick to my plan and get a forged bottom end?

I have no direct experience with hyper pistons. The internet consensus from what I've read appears that 10psi is about the upper limit that hyper pistons like. However, I dont think that the amount of boost is the only factor in people going forged. For more information check this blurb on wiki:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypereutectic_piston

Something that struck me when reading it was this:

The biggest drawback of adding silicon to pistons is that the piston becomes more brittle as the ratio of silicon is added. This makes the piston more susceptible to cracking if the engine experiences pre-ignition or detonation.
So it possibly has just as much to do with improper tuning or the piston being less forgiving than it does with the inherent strength of the piston.

The article also talks about different alloys used on making hyper pistons. Something else I didnt know is that hyper pistons, while usually cast, can be forged. This means that equating hyper with cast may not always (but usually is) the case.

At 10 psi if your tune is conservative and the boost isn't going up, I wouldn't see an issue with keeping the setup you got. If it were me, and I was already taking an engine apart, I would make sure my pistons were forged.

A quick search found that Keith Black does offer hyper pistons that are forged (the example I found was starting with 2816 alloy for GM engines) so you may already have forged pistons and not even realize it.

Keep us posted and let us know how it goes.

You will be fine at that boost level with the hypers. All 93 and up 5 liters came with hyper pistons from the factory and many have run more that 10psi with them. I had an s-trim on my 93 for years.

you keep that car away from detonation and you will be fine

There are a ton of people out there running blowers and nitrous on hyper pistons and doing just fine
    88 GT...and some boost
