    Gear choices>>>>>>

Thinking of gears for the 04. Its a 5 speed. I'm considering 3.90's because I do alot of highway driving and I believe 4.10's are to high and that 3.73's are to low. Any thoughts? thanks

sounds like you got it all figured out.

EDIT: I had 4.10 in my PI-swapped '97 and I got 3.73 in this '01. Your assumptions are correct, IMO.

3.90 seems like the best gear for the 4.6, but Ford doesn't make that gear. So, it's a little bit more work to install a 3.90. Most mechanics will charge you more to put a Motive or Richmond gear in than a Ford gear. Maybe they can elaborate.

4.10's don't give you much room for improvement in the 1/4 unless you want to shift to 5th. 4th tops out about 108mph.

I don't know about 3,90s, but these 3.73 will do about 125 just over 6K rpms in 4th. If you like to "air" it out every once in a while without shifting into that 747 overdrive, do the 3.73.

I got 23.9MPG coming back from Carlisle today with the 3.73.

Wow, that kind of sucks. My mach with the 4.10's was good to about 122-125 before topping out 4th. That was just about perfect.

My brother runs motives with no problems. The fox has ford gears but the damn thing is not running yet. 4.10's just seem to high. 3.73 just seem to low for a SOHC engine. RPM's and all. I'll be doing the gears just like my fox.

6,800 redline? If you removed the rev-limiter on the 2v, you might be able to get 110-112? at 6,200. there are calculators somewhere on the innanet, but I'm too lazy to look right now.

Let me clear up the murky water here.

With 4.10's in 4th (1:1) with a tire that is 26" tall 117 MPH can be achieved with an rpm of 6,199 rpm.;)

EDIT: from my own personal experience and maybe the tach or speedo was off? At just over 6,000RPM in 4th the speedo was 108-110mph.

top speed. I don't think we're all on the same page. I want a top speed of over 120 but am not doing 3k at 80.

That was about my top of forth, so it would be about 6800-6900 rpm's. I believe fuel cut out was 7000.
