What does a slipping clutch act like?

This just happened to me a 2nd time and I want to know if its a slipping clutch.

I was in 5th gear on the highway at a relatively low RPM (like 2500 or so) and decided rather than downshift to just open the throttle. Right as the turbo spooled or close to it (i think thats where it was) the rpms suddenly climbed like I was just revving it.

I let off the throttle and then re-applied gas gently and everything was back to normal. It shifted fine, mild acceleration in all gears was fine. I don't want to hammer it to keep testing it to see if it will repeat it because its my daily and I cant afford to throw it back in the shop just yet.

So anyway, is this the behavior of a slipping clutch?

    Thanks.

crap. Yet another expense on this thing. Just when I have the funds together to get it paid off, something else comes along and screws me.

So in other words, Im on borrowed time on this clutch. Great... just great...

If im VERY easy on it, do you think its drivable for a week or so given it only happens in 5th gear under extreme conditions?

yea.... i've heard somewhere that the clutch is most likely to slip in the top gear at the max torque RPM...
So, of course, the higher the gear you're in, the more likely it is to slip... you can probably drive it around a bit as it is, just try to stay outta 5th gear

I agree with the diagnosis. How many miles on it? Sounds like an upgraded unit is needed. Front drive clutches suck to do - for the effort/labor it takes, you might as well upgrade to something that won't need replaced for a long time...

    Good luck!

this clutch lasted about 50k miles so all in all I guess I cant complain.

I went to lunch and it was tough getting it into gears, so this thing is definately on the way out. looks like public transit next week :(

When my SHO clutch went I had similar symptoms. It got very hard to put it into gear. Turns out the T/O bearing went bad and chewed through the fingers on the pressure plate. In my case the clutch disc was fine, but since the pressure plate was shot I had to replace everything.

Sorry to hear the news. Good luck with the repairs.
