coworkers dog mistaken for coyote... Killed by police

here is a copy of the police report...

HERE IS VERBATIM FROM REPORT( names ommitted)
    3-5-08
On the above date and time WD police recieved a phone call into the station, and was dispatched by secretary ****** that a coyote was in the area of stonecrest and appeared to be injured. Upon arrival i observed a green van sitting in northern entrance to stonecrest plan. I observed that the complainant was ruth *******. She pointed up the street and pointed animal out. The animal did appear to be a wild coyote and had no collar. Animal was mangy looking and limping. I was able to approach animal closer in my vehicle at which time i observed the animal had yellow eyes and a bushy tail. I was able to get the animal to move out of plan w/ my vehicle and pushed animal into field area next to glassmere. At this time i exited car and grabbed shotgun from vehicle. The coyote then walked around the rear parking lot at which time one of the mechanics scott***** was exiting garage and saw animal. He said"damn thats a big coyote" and as it approached him he threw a wrench towards it. The coyote then moved back over to field next to gas station. Once the animal was in a safe area for me to shoot, i killed animal w/ 2 shots of slug. Animal removed from scene.

the remainder of the report is about her calling the station and asking about a dog shot, confirming and picking up the dead dog....

what is questionable is that no where does it say he tried to call to the dog to see if it was tamed and could respond to a human. no where does it say the dog came across as threatening, rabid, growling, or anything to indicate it was a danger to anyone.

mechanic at gas station talked to owner of the dog and confirmed dog showed no signs of being injured, and that he wasnt afraid of the dog but threw the wrench to keep it from going towards the road....

the dog would have made a world record for a coyote(75-80lbs) not to mention looked more like a wolf. Coyotes have a fox-like body and are very scraggily... it is a real sad story and i feel for her, dog was 6 years old and was an outside dog and happened to slip her collar this day. Dog made the paper a few years ago for saving a family across the street when the house was on fire by barking and howling until her owners came out and went and woke the ppl up....

an even more disturbing part of the story is that the police called a local garage and were parading the so called COYOTE around for everyone to take pictures of and gawk at... THE DOG CATCHER HAS Wednsdays off so no animal people were even called... more to come as she pursues the matter

WTF? Even if they thought it was a coyote, why did they kill it? The police don't regularly drive around and shoot ground hogs, opossums, birds, snakes, turkeys or DEER do they????????????????????

The owner doesn't have a foot to stand on because the dog was loose and not licensed at the time. I know you said she slipped her collar, but the LAW IS THE LAW.

If I was the owner, I would call the police every time a moving creature was on my property.

Think about that statement for a sec. If it was in a populated area. I've never heard of someone scared for their life from a solo or pack of rabid turkeys. Except on South Park.

nobody was "scared for their life" in the OP's remarks ???

What I'm saying is why did the police shoot a wild animal for no reason. Just because coyotes are migrating back into our area for whatever reason, they are no more dangerous than those other animals I mentioned.

I didn't say that anyone was scared for their life in this particular case, but overall, I don't think that anyone has ever called the popo for any other fearful critter. Would you want you small child or pet outside while they are around? They don't eat your garden! Also i'm positive it is year round coyote hunting.

    They're not wanted.

she has a foot to stand on.. police cant shoot wild animals for any reason unless they pose a threat... just because the dog had no license or collar doesnt mean that the cop had justification to put it down. It posed no threat and wasnt aggressive, just a call from an idiot woman thinking it must be a coyote. They have offered to "replace" the dog but she has other things that she wants to come to light before she will let this go before seeking legal help. She def. has a case for a # of reasons... things will be happening in the near future and i will keep everyone posted...

wow I would be seriously p'od! That is completely uncalled for. They should have called wildlife control if there was a problem to trap and relocate the animal. Maybe then they would have figured out it was a pet. A~~holes.

The most mangy and mean dogs I've ever seen were strictly outside dogs. Couldn't even get near them...even the OWNERS would just throw food in their "area".

Why someone would have a "PET" they love so much outdoors yr around is beyond me.

it was a marmalute husky mix... it was an outside dog, even when it was a pup it never liked being inside and would stand at the door and bark, some animals like the outdoors better than being inside
