not trying to hijack... Scott, be careful with the 2002-2004 GSXR 1000. I know you're a bike dude and I'm sure you've done your research, but those first generation Gixxer 1000s were brutal. The power comes on hard and fast. Many an experienced rider has been spit off a 02/03/04 model year. If you read the bike tests, you'll see that Suzuki actually tamed the power down a bit for '05. Oh, there's still enough there to kill yourself, but it doesn't hit as hard and fast as the earlier models.
Good luck in your search and be safe.

Scott, I first think you need to get your license. I have been riding for a long time. I have had many bikes. Started with a 600, had about 4 of them then I got the Gix 1K. The 1000's are not for putting around. You need to get more experience before you jump into something like this. Yeah, it would be "cool" to get one. When a bike has the power to do a power wheelie at 140 in 5th gear, it has no business being on the street. There should be a law and requirements for these bikes. You should at least have a license and have at least 5 years riding experience to get one of these things. Not trying to be a dick here, just saying my thoughts on them. My next bike will be a 600.

had a 1000 rode it a few times i could bring it up in 4th doin about 90-100 ,, very scary bikes . actually got busted doing it and allmost lost my cdl and my job . those bikes should not be bought for anybody without at least 5yrs experience...
TODAY IS THE DAY I MAKE A DIFFERENCE !!!!!
I agree with Wick about the experience needed, except 1 small thing... I think you should have plenty of experience, but i don't think years is the way it should be quantified... You should have a certain # of miles "in the saddle" on a bike .... I've been riding since i turned 16 and i just turned 23. That's only 7 years... but i've put a good 50,000 miles on my bikes over that time... that's more than most guys twice my age... maturity and responsibility takes a huge part in not killing yourself, but so does just having the experience to know how to deal with certain situations that can pop up out of the blue...

delldoe is selling a real nice gixer 750 search his post
i saw that... its a very sharp bike...
I really am wanting a R1 though... my reason - i was into dirtbikes as a little kid but when i got into sportbikes was the '99-'00 range, and the R1 was my dream bike... I've always been very partial to them and that's why i really want one... I won't rule out a GSXR-1000 if i find a killer deal, but i really would like a Yami

I've seen a couple people start on 1000cc. Responsibility is the key. Most will say they don't see the need for a 1000cc on the street. I think the 600's are pretty damn fast. I do know a lot of guys on 1000cc's, and pretty much they all told me the same thing, "you should have bought a 1000 from the start because you'll want to upgrade in a year anyway." However, they're are a few people who want to bump it back down to a 600, bc all that power of a 1000 is useless most of the time on the street. Just gotta do what you think you want to, you're going to get mixed opinions anyway.

All the street bikes these days are super fast. I'm not a bike guy, but I certainly admire their performance - I just hate getting buzzed in traffic. From what I've seen, guys without a lot of seat time should start out with a 600 at most. Even those bikes are super quick. It will just take you a few seconds longer to hit 150. A buddy I work with has a sweet 2004 1000RR. Prior to this bike he had a Honda 950 and a Honda 600 for the track. Once he bought the 1000 he sold the 600 because he's hooked on the power of the 1000. But he is a very experienced rider. The 1000 is insane - absolutely crazy fast. He bought it from a place in Texas after someone laid it down. Damage was all cosmetic. He fixed all the broken stuff, polished the entire frame, swing arm, etc., then painted the bike. He did all the work himself. You almost never see a bike as tricked out as this. If you guys want something polished shoot me a PM and I'll pass it on - he does nice work for a reasonable price. Here's a photo:

Thanks Rob - it really is a sweet bike. You don't see many bikes out there with fully polished frames. And Dan rides it, balls out, a few times a year at track days at BeaveRun.
It is scary just how fast almost any new bike is these days. Like SV said - even a newer 600 is going to outrun the majority of bikes on the road. The power-to-weight ratio is ridiculous. The experienced riders know to put on the helmets, full leathers, and back braces when they head out on even a "mild" ( if there is such a thing ) cruise on one of these beasts.
