I know youll like this answer 4.30s. I dont know much about the S197 but 4.10s always seem to be a good choice for a 5-speed mustang.

5:13's for the M'Fing Win!!!
Figured it was the 2 of you. Give me a shout at home, my cell's downstairs on the charger.
I think 3.73's would still give you some highway usability, but everyone knows the magical 4.10's make you unbeatable... even against SRT4's!!!
4.30 or bust!!!

4.30's gets my vote. i had 4.10's in my 98 cobra, and it was great. 4.30's would just that much better.

It really depends on your torque curve and other factors. The short (and slightly incorrect to keep it simple) idea is that you want a set of gears that require minimal throttle at your desired cruise speed (65, 75, or whatever the legal limit is or what you want). Having a set of gears too tall or too short will impact how much throttle you need to apply (more to get up a hill because you have gearing in one direction, or more to keep the RPMs up so that you can keep your crusing speed in the other direction).
from what i've seen (and everyone else feel free to chime in since Im going with what i've read) the stock gears for highway driving will perform the best for fuel economy versus 3.73's or 4.10's.
