I have a 71 351W block and an 87 GT 302 block....which one would you build? I am just looking for a bunch of steetable HP in my 93 Coupe.
A 302 block will hold about 500 hp and a 351 block will hold about 650-700.. and it will cost you about the same money to build...more cubes= better...
The only reason I went with a 302 based stroker was because of not wanting to redo my exhaust and buying a new intake and dist...I wish i would have gone the 351 stroker way...I might even be selling my 347 so I can build a 427 Dart stroker

well i have built alot of 347s and 393W, the 393w seem to be alot more streetable because you don't have to build em as big to get the power, put it this way i have a customer i did a 393w in his car and he runs low 11s and drives it to the track, it had a mild tune, dual plane intake, and a small carb, and is totally street credible, I have a customer with 347 i built with about the same stuff and he runs low12s-high11s while driving it to the track, you don't have to wind em as tight either, the 393s build alot more torque accross the board witch is nice for the street.. just my .02$

351W hands down. That 71 block will handle alot of horsepower. I'm running a 74 block. My engine makes just over 700hp and on top of that I've sprayed a fair amount of nitrous on it in the past. It has been in 2 different cars in the last 3 years and has never been apart yet. On the street it never runs over 170 degrees no matter if I'm in the city or on the highway. If you have a 351W to start with, the choice should be easy.

pros and cons to each of them..i personally like the 302 based strokers myself...me and a buddy of mine both made 600 rwhp on a stock block(girdled) 306 w/ a turbo i didnt run mine but 6 months but it is good as new, him however is still using it today, its been 9's@ almost 140 in a very heavy car...from what ive expierenced turbos wont stress a block as bad..my new motor is a dart 4.125 368 and i plan on spraying the house down ..all on pump gas...like i stated earlier theres pros and cons to each, now with that being said if your using a stock block you may want to use the 351 ..we got lucky ..some dont get so lucky..big engine builders claim that 520 hp a stock block will last a long time if all the variables are there ..get it balanced and built with precise tolerences...etc..more cubes usually net more power..but bigger cubes need bigger parts so it is more costly..my choice was close to mikeymustangs i could reuse all my stuff it just made sense..i hope to put it into the 9's n/a or close to it and spray a very large shot..now i will say this if your looking to take that 351 and just keep it stock or close to it.id deff go the 302 route not too many stockish 351's that ive seen run fast..if your stroking then thats a diff ball game..just my opinion
i should have added. i personally never played with a 351 based motor if i would of had to start from scratch i would have myself a nice 440 dart motor..my buddy who is on these forums has a 351 based stroker and well lets just say its a handful...
i do agree with rodeheaver more cubes usually can do it with less wear and tear ..in the end it depends on what your goals are and most imprtantly money ..i think they can be built relatively close price wise..the money saver for me was i had alot of 302 based parts i could reuse...
If money isn't an issue a 351 stroke is the way to go. A nice 408 is an easy storke with enough compression height to have a nice piston with plenty of meat for a strong ring package.
What do you want to achieve with the car/motor?

just put a big ol 460 stroker in it, my car is stock stroke with a 0.030 bore and it runs 10s with a street tune and a c6 tranny, the tunnel ram actually hurts it but i like to see the carbs poking through the hood
