    opinions

I have had this car at my shop since last summer, the customer has stopped like 2 times and dropped off 1800$ for me to get started and the total bill is going to be around 6000$ for the engine build and work, but he hasent made any real efforts to get it done, i feel like giving him his money back and telling him to come and get the car, just wanted some opinions on the matter.. thanks guys.

I would (professionally) give him one last chance to make a genuine gesture to move forward or ask him to pick up the car and his deposit.

There are many ways you could go about it. Probably some sort of high road approach might be in order. I know I wouldnt feel right holding onto some guys money (and his car) if in the end he doesn't want anything done or doesn't want to commit to the project.

Is it a situation where what he originally thought what it would cost and what it is really going to cost were two different things? If so, he may think there is going to be hard feelings if he abandons the project.

But in the end, if youve had it for almost a year now, and he is stagnant with it, I think its time to say "sh1t or get off the pot"- albeit professionally.

kinda hard to believe he'd be slacking on a project like that... maybe he thinks he paid the "security deposit" and is waiting for it to be done to pay the final bill ?? you could tell him he needs to keep bringing money to keep you working on it... or else you'll sell it to me for what you have into it :D

Well, i told him i need at least half down... about 3000$ It is just bugging me to death, and i have to many cars sitting around here anyways at least 10 right now, mostly all are getting worked on just waiting for parts or machine shop stuff, but this guy is killing me.. I have tryed to be nice and tell him i dont let this kinda stuff happen and it makes other customers mad because i will not let them bring there cars here to just set..

I would keep something for the "storage" you have provided him. He does need to come up with some ching to get the project started. Seeing as you need the room for your future jobs, he is basically holding you back. I would politely say something on the lines of please come get this thing outta here or lets continue on with the project. But if you are comming to get it, we need to discuss a storage fee. Anywhere you go and abandon a project, you get charged a storage fee before the vehicle is released.

Hope this gives you some ideas Tim.

i would tell him that you are eager to get started on his car but you need more $ to insure he wants the work done and keep you in the black. if he's serious he'll be there with more dough. otherwise i would politely and professionally tell him that you have other work happening and can't sacrifice the space to store his car while you are doing your best to service other paying customers. if in fact money is an issue? tell him you'd be more than happy to take of him when he is ready to commit... if he's not a total asshat he'll understand your situation. or if he is, you probably don't want to be dealing with him anyway...

edit: and yeah, what wick said...
