Is it just a matter of taking a pair of pliers, grabbing onto the lip that sticks up a little, and gently working it from all sides until it comes out?
just want to make sure before I screw up a valve guide in the process.
Thanks.

so you mean valve seal?? the guides require a air hammer to get out..

not the valve guide, the valve guide seal.
once you remove the valve spring below the valve spring is a metal disc and what appears to be a rubber seal below that. Im trying to sort out if that has to be removed before a head would go to cleaning. Trying to minimize what the machine shop has to do aside from cleaning, crack checking, and deck checking.
this is a v6 head, btw if that helps.
just take it all off, but remember if those are allum heads you will need to have those steel cups/plates under the springs again, the spring should never touch the allum head..
