    Exclamation Replacing Front Hub Assembly

I put another wheel stud in my front hub tonight to replace the stripped one from my tire shop endeavor. Anyhow, this was the replacement stud that was stripped before. The hole in the hub looked stripped to hell and upon pulling the new one through, it went in very easy. I got the wheel on and torqued the lug down to 100 ft lbs without it spinning or stripping, but now I just don't trust it.

So, I know nothing about hubs and/or wheel bearings. If I buy a brand new hub assembly like the one below, is the bearing already pressed into it or what? Is it just matter of unbolting the old one and replacing it with this? I didn't pull the rubber dust cover off to inspect it. What is behind there? just a nut? and how do you turn it without the whole deal spinning? I guess it shouldn't spin because that's why the bearing is there, right?

    Thanks for any help.

Just pop the dust cover off, take the nut off and remove. Nothing pressed. Just pull it off.

It shouldn't be much more than hand tight. If you overtighten it when you put it back on, you will bind the bearing and the wheel will not want to spin freely.

I can't trust you bastids. Since I was on here before I was wondering how it stayed tight and didn't back off. Does it have a split nut with a cotter pin in it or what? If that was the case it would still wobble like hell.

So, about how many ft/lbs should it be torqued to?

I cant remember the torque on it. Its a lock nut. Thr bearing hits against the hub itself. There is a collar/race that in the inner portion of the bearing. That part does not move. Its not a taper bearing, its a roller bearing. They usually are around 50 bucks at advance. Just make it tight. I willget you a torque tomorrow if you really need it.

this would be funny if it was in the "off topic" section instead of "general tech". hopefully nobody ever uses the "search" button on this site and thinks your info is correct.

Anybody know if the nut is 36mm? thanks.

:p I did. Job's done. I can't control myself. Thanks for all the help guys (except you vE ).

The old hub nut came off with a lot less pain and suffering than I thought. I put the breaker bar on it and applied a little body weight and it turned right off.

I torqued the new one to 150ft/lbs (max setting on my wrench) and put another 1/4-1/2 turn on it with the breaker bar. The bar was bending and the car was creaking like it was coming off the jackstand. Hope that's enough torque.

I'm going for my death (test) ride now.

when I took the old hub off, I took a rubber mallet and barely hit the stud I just put in the questionable/stripped hole on the hub. It popped right out. I have no idea how that lug was torquing down without spinning it?

It's all brand new and fixed now, though.
