    Thermostat

well as some of you know i have asked before and still have no figured out why my car backfires/pops and bucks for the first like 5 minutes when first started, well i was just reading on the corral, that putting a 160* tstat in a 5.0 is not a good thing, because it will not be able to heat up properly, well i replaced the original thermostat with a 160* when i did the cobra intake install, could this be the reason why im having problems, and causing it to run like shit when first started!?

changing the stat would not make a difference on how your car runs on the innital start up .. it will just make your car run cooler and thats always good .. so im told .. ive always ran a 160 in all my stangs and never had that prob
TODAY IS THE DAY I MAKE A DIFFERENCE !!!!!

I will first say that I'm not 100% up on the 5.0 EEC's like I am the 2.3 stuff, but in general.........

Before the ECT reaches a certain point, the Ford strategies are to run off base tables, pretty rich, and fixed timing. In other words, the t'stat shouldnt make a difference on a cold start. If you had a wideband, you would see it that way.

Now if, you was asking why your milage sucks and the car doesent run like it should once "warmed" up................

so basically its the exact opposite of what my car is doing so let the tstat alone? lol because my car runs like shit cold, but good when warm, and what you just described it should run good when cold, but shitty when warm??

    lol

I had 3 fox bodies over the years. All 3 were 160 degree stats. No issues.

Sounds like the coil breaking down or some other ignition problem, especially with all this rotton wet weather. Could be fuel too though. Has anyone tried to scope the engine when its acting up.

Does the car have mass air? Could be a connection problem somewhere also and when the car gets hot it starts making good contact. I would check the coolant sensor as well as the air charge temp sensor. I have seen air charge sensors get a piece of carbon on them and the car runs like crap. That problem should be hot also though. Try to look at the grounds and make sure they are clean and tight. Does the car have any mods?

Shit, and your sure its the pump? i really dont want to have to do that....and i dont want it to be like everything else, replace it, and still have the problem..

    Add:

Well i just put the fuel filter in, and checked for vacuum leaks by spraying starter fluid on all the vacuum lines with the motor running, and nothing happened, so i guess there is no vacuum leaks? but it still idles really rough and still bucks and pops...

Could it b the tps still!?!?

Have you checked the fuel pressure?? I would suggest checking pressure at initial start up, see if fluctuation and/or low pressure is present. Let the car reach operating temp, or whenever it seems OK, then check pressure again. Compare the results. If there are discrepencies, as fastfox91 stated, the fuel pump would be suspect.

Take the cap off of the valve, attach a pressure gauge by threading the fitting onto the valve. Pressure should read between 37 and 40 PSI.
Always use caution when working with a pressurized fuel system
