i read in the trib today that people are paying to have nitrogen put in their tires instead of air to increase gas milage and prolong tire life. is this for real or is this just the next in a long line of bogus cons on how to get further on a tank of gas? please let me know if this actually worked for someone who tried it.

If I remember correctly, isn't there 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, by volume, present in atmospheric air? I would like to know the benefits, if any, that pure nitrogen would provide.

you are correct.
As you know when you drive, the air in your tires gets warmer. Warmer means pressure increase. Nitrogen has no pressure increase after driving as far as I am aware.

Put new tires on the wife's Maxima before winter and they came with Nitrogen.
The pressure stayed the exact same all winter.
I had it put in my new summer rubber on my Contour SVT also.
Its free if you buy new tires in my experience.
Now if you have to pay for it, I'm not saying its worth it but I'm a fan so far.
If you're the type that checks tire pressure semi-regularly I'd say don't worry about it.
I think it should be mandatory for all female drivers.

Paying a premium is foolish, but the principal is sound.
Beyond the stability, nitrogen is dry. Beyond the composition of air that is compressed, typical shop systems adda lot of moisture with the "air". A good dryer on the system minimizes the benefit, but N2 will also prevent rusted beads, etc.

this is true, i used to work at a welding supply place and whe actually had customers that would come in and get bottles filled with nitrogen just for there tires.it holds the pressure for a longer period of time no matter what temp. nor the humidity.as far as making the tires last longer not sure on that.
Nascar has been using Helium for a few years now. It does not change to differant temps like air does.
