    Oil prices

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080516/...a/bush_mideast

Fairly interesting, seems like the Saudis' like the inflated prices . Not 100% sure on the accuracy of the facts but this is a quote from the article.

"When Bush first ran for president in 2000, he criticized the Clinton administration for high fuel prices and said the president must "jawbone" oil producing nations and persuade them to drop rates. At that time, oil was nearing $28 a barrel — less than a quarter what it is now." Funny how people quickly forget things like this. The Saudis twice basically laughed at Bush when he requested an increase in production to try to drop the price per barrel.

Is there an underlying message here that the Saudis will increase production if the "customers" (which I assume are the refineries) ask for it? As in to say, they won't do anything, but if the refineries would "ask" then they would increase production so as to discretely point the finger at the refineries as the source of the problem. Am I just burnt out because its Friday or does anyone else see a deliberate, yet concealed message here from the Saudi's? Is this their way of telling us without telling us to try and take action against these "customers" as he refers to them as in order to get the pump prices to drop???

the refineries would ask for it if they could handle it, but they can't. they are at full capacity now. there hasn't been a "NEW" refinery built in this country for over 35 years. the greenie weenies (liberals / democrats) in our own country are what is causing all the heartache. the reason we can't drill in Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, Colorado... etc is because of bills that were written and signed during the Clinton Administration turning those areas into National Forests and whatnot therefore protecting them from any and all industry.

To me, the latter seems moot until the former is changed. Whats the point in drilling if we cant process it anyway.

just trying to make some points. didn't mean to bring "liberals/democrats" into it like I did. I got caught up in the moment.

fvck it then. keep relying on foreign oil and pay out your a$$.

    Let me get this straight.

I suggest we focus on refineries first and drilling second because our refineries are at full capacity and suddenly Im a "liberal/democrat"??

    Uh, no.

We're going to continue to pay out of our a$$ as long as our refining capabilities are maxed out. We could have a trillion times the oil we currently have in reserve and it wont mean jack if we cant refine it because the supply of gasoline cant increase to meet demand.

If our refineries were running at 60% or 70% capacity then I would say yeah its time to drill. But we're not, and to me it makes more fiscal sense for money to be spent on refining first, drilling second.

But hey, since when has fiscal responsibility meant anything to the CONs anyway?

The very scary part of this is there doesn't seem to be anything to prevent them from grinding the pumping process to a halt and pushing the price to double or triple of what it is now! As hard as it is to believe, the Saudis are playing nice with us right now. I guarantee we will be going to war over this. It may take 25-50 years, but we will. If there was anywhere else to get this stuff from, do you think Bush would travel over there and basically plead for them to up production? I could see him doing it in his first term, but this late in his second term? $100/ barrel increase in 8 yrs., talk about inflation.

I was reading a bit and it looks like we caused all of this. We should have put a finders fee on it!! lol

    ECONOMY
Oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia by U.S. geologists in the 1930s, although large scale production did not begin until after World War II. Oil wealth has made possible rapid economic development, which began in earnest in the 1960s and accelerated spectacularly in the 1970s, transforming the kingdom.

Now THAT is interesting! Could have either asked for X% of $$$ or X amount of oil/year.
