If I get straight pipes put on, will it give me enough back pressure to run right?

as was said before i highly doubt back-pressure is the problem....i have a friend with a 2000 GT running open H-pipe with absolutely no problems.

why are you so set on straight pipes? get an off-road H or X pipe and a decent set of mufflers on a cat back and call it a day

I'm too young to truly understand the whole obsession with backpressure from back in the day, but i've read numerous articles about this. Apparently the whole reason you needed to keep a certain amount of backpressure was because if you didnt, the exhaust valves would burn up... Nowadays, with technology being what it is, you don't need this backpressure - nothing bad is going to happen...

Yes, you're powerband will change a little... i'm sure you'll loose a little bit of bottom end torque, but you'll make it up in the top end...

I don't remember you saying anything about the car breaking up at 4500 (see Troll's comment) but if its falling on its face, i doubt its a result of a catback setup (or lack thereof)
