    Water Temp Gauge

Ok, my friend has had a water temp gauge hooked up on his 88 mustang for a few months now, and it has worked great... but no all the sudden it doesnt want to read the temp (takes awhile for it to finally read, and will just jump up to the temp) or wont read at all untill the car is shut off...

    what could be wrong??

The sending unit/sensor that screws into the manifold is probably bad. My car was just doing the same thing and I changed it out and now she works like a champ!

could these be because he has no resevoir or nething, that when the car is cold, it takes awhile to get a reading because the coolant has not heated up yet, so when it heats up it reads good because the coolant needs to build pressure??
im thinking this is why.. because when you take the rad cap off when the car is warm, the coolant is near the top, let it cool it goes pretty far down.. so im thinking is the same thing in the block? and thats why it doesnt read right away??

or what else could be wrong.. its mech, i wouldnt think much could go wrong..

sounds like an air pocket. The bad readings on the temp gauge will be the least of his problems if he doesent get the system up to snuff. Where there's air there sint water, and its hot.

x2! what not in the rad should be in the overflow res. fill up that cooling system or you'll be looking at a lot more than $8 sensor

how can we get rid of the air pockets in his cooling system??

letting the car run with the radiator cap off, and waiting till the radiator ''burps''

will this get rid of the air pockets?

    UPDATE!!!!

well i just tried to ''burp'' the cooling system, i took my rad cap off, started car, let it run for awhile (filled up with coolant of course) and the coolant level dropped a tiny bit, but not much.. then it dropped quite a bit and as soon as the coolant level dropped the temp gauge went up to 160 (160 t-stat) and just stayed there and the coolant level did not drop anymore...then when i shut the car off, the coolant level in the radiator quickly rose back up to full..also the radiator didnt ever ''burp'' but i did notice a few tiny little air bubbles in the coolant in the rad..
is this ok, or is there something wrong??

what you're doing is a step in the right direction. get an overflow. stock one from junkyard for a couple bucks... hook it up and do all that again until it is FULL... AND there is a cold level in the overflow that should have coolant in it too... ;)

well idk if this would work, but i made him a negro rigged overflow tank (sorry if any one takes offense to that) out of my pocketbikes old gas/oil mix tank, with a hose running from rad to the little tank,

just to like catch the coolant as it comes out of the rad..

    will this work?
